He told Peter Robinson during an interview on Friday last week that the subject of the book is k-12 education, the field he has the strongest feelings on.

Sowell acknowledged it will be his final work as he approaches his end, and as such, readers will encounter a more emotional syntax than what they have come to expect from his 20+ other works.

The book will be titled “The Whirlwind We Have Reaped”

This is the theme per Sowell himself:

quote:

Traditional public schools are radically different from almost any other institution in society. Whether it's a hospital, sports arenas, automobile dealerships, churches, charities or whatever, those institutions in order to survive as an institution have to have some clientele that they must please enough for the clientele to come to them. Traditional public schools are radically different in that compulsory attendance laws, provide them with a clientele. The clientele has no choice in the matter. And there is no competition among different traditional public schools because each one has a monopoly and its own district.

Unknown to some, Thomas Sowell is not just a political commentator. He spent 3 decades researching early childhood verbal development and education in New York City. The book in part will be a memoir on his experience observing the poorest public schools in the city. He spent over 1000 hours between 1974 and 1990 shadowing the halls of these schools for his research.

He has already chosen the opening Epigraph as well:
quote:

"I am somehow less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops." - Stephen Jay Gould

Props to him for living such a healthy life that he is able to write entire books well into his 90s.

What a giant of Conservatism.

His observations about tyranny by "experts" are golden:

The problem with K-12 schools is they focus heavily on preparing students for standardized tests like the ACT and SAT, teaching a lot of irrelevant information just to boost test scores. Many of these students won’t even attend college, let alone graduate, but we act like they’re all going to be doctors in the future.

The problem with public schools is your kids have to attend schools with kids you don’t want your kids to be around.

I don’t think it’s much more complicated than that.

In a sane world, he would be celebrated as one of the top American minds of the 20th century, and one of the greatest African Americans of all time. You could put him on a debate stage with ANY liberal, and he would eat their lunch.

Imagine if a majority of black folk would idolize and emulate black intellectuals like Sowell and Clarence Thomas instead of ghetto culture.

I do find it interesting how blacks have some of the absolute worst and dumbest of the political world like Maxine Waters and Crockett yet also have some of the most brilliant legal and political minds like Sowell and Thomas. Talk about one hell of a contrast with not much “in between”

Which is why so few people know him, especially young blacks.

Perfect example, the late Kyren Lacy.

This never happened since masks were useless in containing the spread of the virus for the general population.

But by all means, continue to live in your make-believe fantasy world that these all-knowing government bureaucrats saved the human race from extinction.

I started reading his newspaper columns back in the late 70s. The comment I remember most was written in one of his books. It was about how lucky he was to grow up in segregated schools. He said the HS class he graduated in had a big number of future doctors, lawyers, businessmen and almost no criminals. That same HS today has lots of drop outs, drug addicts and criminals. He blamed LBJ's civil rights and the welfare programs.

England does have a better idea about it; past 16 , hate school, need a skill to pay rent?...finish High School at the vocational level, Learn a trade outside of high school dropout Mickey D's to earn rent.

We are too lenient on judging academic capabilities and desire and too demanding on fruitless compulsory attendance...which mucks it up with incessant distractions hurting the ones that want to be there.

Anyone inside a surgery room must wear a mask for the protection of the surgery patient.

Did she wear one when she went to put gas in the car???
