The University of Michigan will spend more than $18 million this academic year on salary and benefits for its diversity, equity, and inclusion staff, according to an analysis by economics professor emeritus Mark Perry.

That figure, which amounts to the cost of in-state tuition for 1,075 students, will be paid out to more than 142 staff during the 2022 to 2023 school year, according to Perry’s analysis of public data.

The university’s vice provost for equity and inclusion, Tabbye Chavous Sellers, is the highest-paid DEI staffer. Sellers, the wife of former DEI provost Robert Sellers, makes $380,000. Seventeen DEI staffers make more than $200,000 in total compensation, according to the data. Ninety-five staffers make more than $100,000 in total compensation.

The university’s DEI staff has seen rapid growth in recent years; in the 2018 and 2019 academic year the school employed just 82 DEI staffers , for a total cost of $10.6 million. The staff grew to 126 during the 2021 to 2022 school year at a total cost of $15.6 million.

Staff positions with “diversity,” “equity,” or “inclusion” in the job title did not begin popping up at the university until the 2004 to 2005 school year, Perry told the Daily Caller.

What, exactly, could 142(!) DEI staffers possibly find to do on one individual university campus?

Edited to reflect correct staff count.

Well, once they see there is nothing to do, I expect several false flags (nooses, swastikas, racist graffiti) found to be perpetrated by some employed by the university.

Paid for by students taking out bigger and bigger loans

Loans which are going to get forgiven by the government soon enough

In the end, taxpayers fund it all

You don't build a DEI human resource complex to just sit idle.

Imagine, 142 DEI staff members parsing every written line, every spoken sentence, and every filmed shot for any slip that could even be remotely interpreted as offensive. Rationally minded students and faculty don't stand a chance.

I wouldn’t mind this at all if I knew it would incur consequences. However they are paid via our tax dollars, so there is no consequences.

Seems like that number could easily be cut to 20 or less

Honestly it could be cut to 0 and there would be no ill consequences

This might be the worst part

1. That salary is outrageous

2. What could possibly be more antithetical to diversity and inclusion than blatant nepotism at the highest levels of the organization?

If you look at what Jordan Peterson is currently going through in Canada, it’s easy to see that we are not far behind. Step one of “legitimizing” these fake degrees and useless departments until they are entrenched is done. Next they will start with the Maoist struggles sessions and thought policing Peterson is being forced to do if he wants to keep his job.

I’ll raise you 2,456,789…go look at your state and federal governments.

It’s disgusting and not one week goes by that another hire for the Ministry of Truth is championed while the actual mission of the agency where I work is failed to be addressed.

You could send 3000 inner city Detroit kids to private schools for what they're paying in DEI salary... It's about looking like they care

This is also why I say pay your loans back.

Liberals have bloated universities with useless shite.

This is what happens when you have an embarrassment of riches.
These universities are as bad as the wall street banks they protested more than a decade ago. They should lose their tax exempt status for taking advantage of America's youth.

I said in a thread the other day that I saw a graphic on that a year or two ago and couldn't believe it. Also, check out Ohio State.

That staff size and payroll is larger than most small businesses in the USA!

Truly wasteful public spending to simply check boxes.
