There are actually a LOT of very wealthy people there. But not much of a middle class.

That's how it is in many countries worldwide. Two classes, ultra-wealthy and poor.

It's what every liberal wants here also.

The English had a really different attitude toward the natives. John Rolfe married Pocahontas for example.

Pocahontas was also recognized as a noblewoman when she came to London.

It's truly a sad thing. If you look on a map at where it is, talk about a treasured plot of earth! I always say they should just make it a ward of the US and let us run it for them.

Corruption and Cartels, to start.

Cartels are a product of corruption. Mexico has been poor and corrupt long before the Guadalajara Cartel grew in the 70s and 80s.

Mexico is actually a country rich in natural resources!!

So is subsaharan Africa. The issue is transporting those goods. Much like in SubSaharan Africa, the interior of Mexico is on a plateau that is a much higher elevation than the coast lines. As a result, the navigable rivers do not proceed very far inland before they become unusable for boat traffic. In Europe, you have many navigable rivers like the Don, the Danube, the Rhine, the Seine, the Dnieper, Liore, Thames, etc. Canada has the Ottowa River, the St. Laurence, and the Great Lakes which it shares with the U.S. The U.S. has the Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, The Hudson, The Quinnipiac, The Delaware, The Columbia, The Potomac, the Rio Grande, the Colorado, etc. These rivers all penetrate hundreds of miles inland from the coast allowing goods to move cheaply from inland to export. Mexico's rivers aren't suitable for ship traffic very far inland from port.

That means that goods have to be moved by less efficient means, railroads and trucks, to connect the population center of Mexico City with coastal ports for export and import. In addition, these mountains and elevation changes make moving goods between regions of Mexico difficult. As a result, the plateau historically struggled to control the provinces that were outside of the plateau without being incredibly authoritarian and heavy-handed.

Nations that cannot easily move goods across them via navigable waterways will struggle economically compared to nations that have large swaths of them accessible via easily traversable waterways.

I often wonder “What would it have taken?” for Mexico to become what China is to the US - a manufacturing zone for cheap goods. Plenty of stuff i

I’ve pondered this very questions for a couple decades. Why haven’t we built up our neighbor instead of the ccp on the other side of the earth? It certainly isn’t greener.

It's hard for us to comprehend the level of corruption that exists in Mexico. It is at every level. You want your kid, who makes good grades, to go to college? You need to bribe several people. You want to get a decent job or open up a field office in Mexico? Some palms may need to be greased.

Like Communism, the whole thing is just really inefficient and demoralizing for the people and ultimately results in poverty.

Lol, bud…you are stuck in the 80’s if you think that’s the case! NAFTA changed a lot of that!
When I grew up in Mexico City in the 70’s & 80’s sure i would give you your point….,a lot has changed as far as the major markets in Mexico being better connected with new highways etc…..
Mexico to Acapulco is only 237 miles, same distance to Veracruz (just to give you an idea of the distance)

It's exactly what socialism creates. There are 2 classes of people, the very rich and the very poor. The corruption keeps the very rich, rich.

Yes and No, the middle class in Mexico grew exponentially thanks to NAFTA…..we actually created a middle class that before was missing as you’ve stated. That changed with NAFTA!
The current socialist government of Lopez obrador (a real idiot) is trending Mexico now more towards Venezuela than towards a capitalist market! Very sad truly, everything that was accomplished during the NAFTA years has gone down the shitter…..almost!!

Mexico has a highly developed transportation infrastructure, and its economy is far from struggling. Mexico has the 14th largest economy in the world. ranked by exports in 2020 they were 13th in the world, higher than India, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Australia, etc. They are the largest exporter of trucks in the world. They are a leading exporter of computers, automotive parts, and oil.

I'm basing this on what the company I worked for experienced. They closed up an office in Monterrey because they were getting shaken down by everyone with a government job. Got some people over here on H1-B visas. Supposedly, Monterrey is beautiful though.

The CCP is brutally oppressive to laborers while Mexico is not.

The best way to move Mexico forward is to legalize production, distribution, and consumption of all drugs here in the states. Legalizing it in Mexico as well would really seal the deal.

Random Mexico anecdote

Many employers have you sign a resignation letter the day you start.

They leave the date field blank, and if you ever fall short, they’ll pull it out of your file.
