If you beat a team head to head but they advance ahead of you because they scored more goals? WTF?

Encourages more scoring. I'm all for it. Instead of complaining, why not suggest a better tiebreaker?

Run differential or goal differential should be a secondary tie breaker when a team in a tie had a better head to head record than the other teams in the tie.

Exactly. Having it as the PRIMARY tiebreaker is stupid.

In a three way tie it would make sense

If two teams are tied, not using head to head is borderline retarded

But FIFA is full retard so it makes sense here

Actually in this case goal differential would make sense

OP is a tard, not FIFA

All teams are 2-1

Sweden beat Mexico
Mexico beat germany
Germany beat Sweden

There is a three team tie with all teams beating each other in some way.

What sport uses head to head in a 3 way tie?

Except that Germany isn't 2-1... unless they can score really quick. (Or my feed is behind...)

ETA: Now they're definitely not 2-1...

We used to have a 10 point system in our youth tournaments.

6 for a win
3 for a tie

1 point for every goal up to 3
1 point for a shutout

Essentially a 3-0 win was max points. It’s a good system to discourage beating up on crap teams 12-0 or something

It's pretty pathetic.
Biggest event in the game of soccer and it's based on some stupid point system to advance.
What about penalty kicks to decide it, that's even worse.
If the world cup is such a big deal why not have it every year.
I see they are increasing the field as well for World Cup, more weird tiebreakers on horizon.

Its 4th.

Premium for scoring.

it's done to encourage scoring and open play in all games, so every second of every game counts, though some leagues do use head to head as the first tiebreaker. i get why some people don't like it but everybody knows the rules going in, maybe if Germany hadn't dicked around as much as they did against lesser competition they would have gone through.

Best part is that a loss is 0-3 points, a draw is 4-6, and a win is 8-10.
