This isn’t what everyone wants to hear, but the quality for the USA just isn’t there

It’s improving, but it’s a ways off. If you constantly have to make excuses tournament after tournament as to why you underperform, maybe you just arent that good. This is not a golden age…it’s bronze at best.

Still way way better than Panama. Even with a man down

Being a team we can be consistently proud of.

You’re right Rosalind. It’s the players

It is, it's also Gregg, it's also the cheap arse federation.
Like we started the exact same XI today with a dude on a 45 minutes cap because, in theory, that was our best chance to win. We have no depth.

Its all Jurgen's fault...

He was the turning point in a lot of ways.
Sunil saw him as his great white whale and kept upping the USSF offer until Jurgy couldn't tell them no anymore. USMNT got burned bad by that deal because Jurgen was a shite coach with zero tactical gameplan while splintering the player base, leading to the biggest embarrassment in modern US Soccer history.
Because of that, we went with the cheap, safe white bread option after a year of purgatory under Dave Sarachen.

It’s better than Panama. Berhalter has to go, but you still have major problems with the entire system.

I think the players have a problem in terms of approach to each match. They just come out flat more often than not, like they don’t expect physicality or pressing from another team. That results in taking too much time on the ball, poor passing, etc.
Like yesterday, we had to have known against a CONCACAF opponent in a major tourney that we were going to catch some shithousery. We also had to have known that the ref may not be helpful to us. Timo screwed up, and he has acknowledged and apologized publicly, but the damage is done.
But part of that comes from coaching too, doesn’t it? Surely that had to be part of the team’s prep and talks leading into the game, right? “Expect physicality, expect bad calls, maintain composure.”

To be fair, weren’t a lot of us during the Jurgy days screaming to see the same lineup twice in a row for once? Or even under Bruce 2.0?
We finally have a SET starting XI, and now we want rotation, but in the same breath we say we don’t have the depth to compete on the world stage?
Which is it?
I am in the camp that we should stick with an XI that starts, be strategic with our subs, and get as far as we can.
Oh, and fire Gregg.

In his post match presser Gregg talked about how the team had discussed this referee specifically and how they could expect poor calls, in addition to rough play from Panama. It’s not like the team approached this game naively because of GGG. They have enough experience in concacaf to know better, they had an extra warning from the coach before the game, and then Weah forces us to play a man down for ~85 minutes. Say what you will about this generation’s talent, but they don’t have the chip on their shoulders and bite that the LD/CD generation did.

There are 16 teams in Copa America. What rosters are you taking over the US's? Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Colombia are the only ones I am. So we have the 5th most talented roster and we aren't going to qualify. Yes we lack the player quality to win these type of tournaments, but we absolutely have the quality to expect to easily qualify out of a group with Bolivia and Panama.

How would you know? We sit back and play uninspired and scared for at least half our games. Look no farther than England. You gonna tell me the quality isn’t there? These guys aren’t given the chance to really show their worth. There’s a reason most of them are playing in Europe. Spare me.

Spot on. And I’d probably put the roster right there with Uruguay and Colombia. Coaching makes a difference at this stage. Look at Brazil, so much talent and they look like shite and are playing uninspired as well. You have former players calling them out too.

You don't know a thing about international soccer.

I keep hearing this.
I can maybe see this being an excuse against a top 20 team.
But it’s Panama. They have worse depth than us.
It’s why they are ranked 40something
