The cheapest iPhone 16 model was launched in the U.S. with a sticker price of $799, but could cost as much as $1,142, per calculations based on projections from analysts at Rosenblatt Securities, who say the cost could rise by 43% – if Apple is able to pass that on to consumers.

A more expensive iPhone 16 Pro Max, with a 6.9-inch display and 1 terabyte of storage, which currently retails at $1599, could cost nearly $2300 if a 43% increase were to pass to consumers.

Guess I'm going to be rocking my iPhone 11 for a couple more years then.

Good! I'm tired of money going to foreign countries.

Maybe Apple (or someone else) will invest into making an all American made smartphone.

That's MAGA's plan...

I have no issues with that but it will probably still be a $2300 phone. The only reason we have so many things made overseas is because they can do it for cheaper.

Or... you know... could not happen soon.

Yep. I've been pretty vocal about wanting to support American made products. I also support tariffs for that reason. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to pay more for things, but if it means a little pain to get things back on track - that's fine.

The hope is that all this doesn't just get sidelined by a future administration. Then, it will be for nothing.

Maybe they should devote more time developing their "Apple Intelligence" since everyone is leaving them behind. It wasn't nice of them to sell us AI-enabled hardware to have it only provide clipped summaries of texts, e-mails, etc. which rarely bring any value.

What you meant to say is they make them overseas to increase profit. Quit buying them and prices will fall.

Well yeah, sell them cheaper and still make a profit.

Not if they are making them in the US. The cost of production will be too high.

What does "back on track" mean?

We remain the dominant world economy with no rival and benefit greatly (possibly the most) from this setup.

This is all up to Apple. They literally buy the phones from themselves. If they buy them at their own cost, then the that tariff would be less than half of that projection. They haven’t done that at their own cost because they are actively evading US tax and pushing all of their profits to Ireland where they do zero actual development of said phones.

This is perhaps the very best example where we really need these tariffs. Overall, I think they’re stupid, but Apple really deserves them.

Would take a decade of investment to get there. And that's still an if. Nobody in the world can get even close to TSMC right now.

We would have to accept worse performance or higher costs

Apple is sitting on a mountain of cash. Will tariffs hurt their bottom line? Absolutely. But they can choose how much profit they need to make over not selling phones. They could also manufacture a cheaper alternative phone.

Also, tariffs are fluid. Donald Trump is the master of the art of the deal. Today, the EU has already proposed that they'll go in on 0 tariffs for American goods if the USA reciprocates.

I get the sense that Trump doesn't want tariffs long term. He is using them as a tool for other countries to come down on tariffs on American goods.

Also, for my liberal friends. If tariffs are so bad and are a dumb idea, why are all the other countries doing it to american goods?
Whoopsies - conundrum.

Your blind spot on these sorts of issues is alarming.

Cheap toys and plastic shite is fine to get from China. It is not to the United States' best interest to have to import everything of consequence from Asia, mainly China.

Pharmaceutical drugs, critical electronic components, transportation, defense tech, core infrastructure (concrete, steel, electrical grid) components - we should be self-reliant in all of those things (as we are in energy and food production).

Period.

The fact that a phone is already up to $1,600 now should be the first indication that we’re on our way to a $2,300 phone with or without tariffs.
