Amazon devices will soon automatically share your Internet with neighbors

ARS Technica article
quote:
If you use Alexa, Echo, or any other Amazon device, you have only 10 days to opt out of an experiment that leaves your personal privacy and security hanging in the balance.
On June 8, the merchant, Web host, and entertainment behemoth will automatically enroll the devices in Amazon Sidewalk. The new wireless mesh service will share a small slice of your Internet bandwidth with nearby neighbors who don’t have connectivity and help you to their bandwidth when you don’t have a connection.
By default, Amazon devices including Alexa, Echo, Ring, security cams, outdoor lights, motion sensors, and Tile trackers will enroll in the system. And since only a tiny fraction of people take the time to change default settings, that means millions of people will be co-opted into the program whether they know anything about it or not.

If you don't want to have to read the article to figure out how to opt out

Fortunately, turning Sidewalk off is relatively painless. It involves:
Opening the Alexa app
Opening More and selecting Settings
Selecting Account Settings
Selecting Amazon Sidewalk
Turning Amazon Sidewalk Off

but, "muh iPhone does the same thing!"
How much per month will they pay me to put this device in my house? I'll consider it when the checks start flowing to pay for this data.

Not sure why you're bringing the iPhone up here, but yes, it's called Find My.

I opted out and will be replacing my Echos if this gets any bigger, but FWIW the data is allegedly limited to a small amount. It's not like it's gonna let your neighbor hop on your wifi and watch Netflix all night.

I opted out by not having Amazon devices in my home

I'm more worried about a gateway to my network being open then the amount of data being used.

I don’t show to have that as a setting on my Alexa

I don't see privacy discussed too much on here and I'd be interested to hear some different perspectives.
That's because "most" people in America truly don't care about privacy. They say they do. They complain about their privacy being misused. But we have to admit that most will give up their "private" info too easily. Whether to buy something on the internet, signing up for free access to sites, to whatever.

I've had someone tell me they love getting targeted ads. Though that person has the least common sense of anyone I know and they're a pure consumer/robot.
We need to spread awareness. One must be careful though, reveal to some people how much they are being spied on and they want to shoot the messenger. Deep down they know it is an invasion of privacy but they can't give up the convenience.

Highjack, are there any similar devices to the Echo Show or the Google Nest/other smart displays that can use a battery? Most I've seen are wired, and I was thinking about getting one for my home office that I could also take out on the deck, in the yard etc to use as a bluetooth speaker.

Is this how it works with the Fire Stick?
I don’t see those options on the Dire Stick.
After some Google searching, Firesticks aren’t a part of this.
