Apple Watch and iPhone pairing

Wife got new iPhone 16 today and she has a series 3 watch and they won’t pair. Did Apple make it where the old watches won’t pair to new phones and stop supporting it? Seems like something Apple would do.

The Apple Watch Series 3 is not compatible with the iPhone 16. Apple because watchOS 9 or newer is required for the iPhone 16. Apple stopped supporting the Apple Watch Series 3 with the release of watchOS 9 in 2022.

Most definitely. They won't continue to support a device that is over 6-7 years old. They do it with phones all the time. It will still function and work, just doesn't receive updates. I think it was fairly recent too. My daughter had an old series 3 watch and it still worked with her iPhone 14, but she got a newer watch for Christmas.
