I know about Dragon Naturally Speaking. I was not sure if this was actually a thing folks used. I typically type my own stuff but wondered if dictating would expedite matters more.

Anyone use any type of voice to type software?

Tried them in the past, spent more time going back and fixing grammar, out of place words, and fixing the homophones then I would have just typing it in to start with. Which still requires massaging since I think faster than I type and still miss words and the like, but at least I know what common typing errors I make and where to look for them in context.

That's my fear. Wasn't sure how good they worked. I felt I would spend more time stopping or correcting issues than just typing it myself

I used Dragon three years ago when I had surgery on. my hand and couldn't type. Doctor recommended it. It was VERY good. Much better than what you use on your phone such as Siri or Google voice.

no lie, my high school kid was really behind on doing his term paper and wasn't the best at typing.

what i did was have him create a google doc on his PC, then open the same document on his phone and just voice dictate the whole thing and edit/clean up mistakes on the PC.

worked like a charm.

eta this was 10 years ago; so no idea what windows offers now, but at the time, it was pure magic to him.

I use voice to text a lot on my Pixel 6 phone. Been doing that for several years. Saves a lot of time. You can also quickly text a recording of your voice straight in the text message and send it. I also speak to type emails on my phone. I thought most everyone does this on their phones, do they not?

I don’t think there is a “best software” as performance greatly depends on the device you’ll be using.
You can find a “whisper asr” port to almost any os.

I also have a pixel. Are you using the mic for an audio recording or do you speak and it transcribes

exactly.

no need to buy anything. voice-to-text 15 years ago let you say things like "open quotes", "period" "question mark" "new paragraph"...

you can literally 'type' a 10 page paper in no time.

I just click the little microphone icon instead of typing a text. I also have a little microphone icon that I click to speak instead of typing an email in my Yahoo email app. They were just there to use. I didn't add anything to get that functionality. You can also add the punctuation when speaking. Just pause and say "comma", "period", "question mark", "exclamation point", etc., and you don't have to go back and add those.

I've use the voice-to-text capability of MS Word on many writing projects and have found it very useful. Incorporation of AI has markedly improved accuracy if you use a complex vocabulary. You get the best results in a quiet room and a good mic positioned at a fixed distance from your mouth. I use headphones with a built-in mic.

I am, however, one of those people who think better with my hands on the keyboard. So, I mix dictation and hand keying. The latter when I have to think. This post was hand keyed.

Built into Google apps. I've had a few students with dyslexia use it for writing assignments. They would just dictate responses.

I actually started using Microsoft word on my phone, voice to text, then emailing copy to myself to further format and edit

Works pretty well
