Asus router keeps losing internet connection. Any ideas on what I should try?

I have an asus router (ac1900) connected to an arris surfboard modem (sb8200), and it’s been pretty rock solid for the last 3.5 years or so.
Just yesterday I started losing connection to the internet. I would log into asus router page, do a reboot, and everything would be back up and running no problem…and then every 1-2 hours the same issue would happen. I’d lose the connection, do a reboot and all is good, rinse and repeat.
As far as troubleshooting I’ve unplugged & plugged back in both the modem & router. I’ve also run a cable into the second port on the modem to see if it was an isp issue, but I was able to access the internet just fine connected directly to the modem with a laptop, when the router didn’t have internet access. So it would appear it’s an issue with the router.
The only thing left that I haven’t tried yet, that I can think of, is to do a factory reset of the router. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue, or any other ideas on what I should check out that I might be forgetting? Oh, and I hadn’t made any changes to the router configuration recently or anything like that.

Before I do a factory reset, I would do another hard reset but disconnect the ISP's connection at the house then reset the modem.
If that doesn't work, ask your ISP if they can do a system reboot from their end. Sometimes there may be an update that has not kicked through. It may take some convincing from your side and them making you repeat steps you've already done (just don't admit that you disconnected the main line into your house as they will just blame that).

You need to scan through the logs in the modem and make sure it isn't losing connection. This could easily be an internet/modem problem and not a router problem.

In my experience from owning several Asus and Netgear wireless routers over the years is that they usually work for a few years before having issues. The reboot fixing the issuing for a few hours or couple days is the classic sign from my own experience and troubleshooting. This assumes the ISP service/hardware isn't having issues.
A wireless router is really 3 devices in 1; router, switch, and access point. All put into the tiniest package possible which is bad because of heat and eventually one of those will probably fail. Also now one piece of software now has to control all those functions which can make it more buggy.
When I built my house, I switched to Unifi gear with separate router, switch and access points. Going almost 6 years now and no issues with any of them.

This is curious. I’ve had the same issue for the last week. Router loses connection. Reboot immediately fixes it.
This is an ASUS XT8 mesh router.
I was about to buy a better ATT fiber gateway. But it could be an update that was pushed.
I’ll get back with you about it.

I think sometimes router flakiness can be caused by cache corruption which is why a reboot "fixes" it for a while. Maybe a factory reset might "fix" it better. Or maybe not. The root cause could be buggy firmware but I think it's more likely to be heat stress. Heat can cause them to malfunction in unpredictable ways.
Routers get hot, switches get hot, and wifi APs get hot. Put those 3 things in 1 tiny box with 0 fans and that's a recipe for failure.

At 3.5 years of life it is time to replace a home router. They just don't last.

You should never ever spend a dime on an At&t gateway.

Absolutely, I've encountered the same issue. My solution was to switch out the router. If you haven't done so yet, consider updating your router's firmware as a possible fix.

Hey all thanks for the thoughts & feedback. I’ll get into the modem logs later and see if anything looks off there, though I’m not really sure what I’ll be looking for. I’m sure I can find an article that might help though. I’m realycc vc really hoping it’s not an isp issue because I absolutely do not want to play that game of trying to find the one customer service rep that could add my modem to their system again. It was a nightmare the first time.
Also, I have an older netgear modem-router combo and I’m wondering if I could plug that into the arris modem through the wan port and just use the modem/router as a router bypassing the modem in it? Should it work by simply plugging and powering it on and connecting the two, or are there settings within the modem/router combo that ill need to turn off to use it strictly as a router? I hope that makes sense? Because if that works and doesn’t drop internet connection surely that would mean it’s just an issue with my original asus router?

Holy crap.
I had an ac68 asus router for years (that never had a hiccup) and upgraded to the ax86 model last year as I expanded my smart home stuff.
The ax86 has been rock solid up until yesterday in which in constantly disconnected from the internet, prompting a reboot each time.
WTF??

I overlooked this when I read it the first time. Did you try running a cable from the laptop to the router when this happens? I'm assuming you r primarily testing wifi.

Same deal. Routers are only about a year old. They worked perfectly until this week. Now they go offline randomly in the evening.
I found a link on Reddit that mentions the culprit.

I actually tried to update the firmware yesterday, and whenever I searched for it I got an error message saying it was unable to contact asus server, or something along those lines. I then tried to manually update it from a downloaded file, but that wasn’t working either for some reason. Then just now I tried again, and it was able to search for, locate and update the firmware from the asus interface. Weird. I have a feeling this won’t fix the issue, but I’m glad I was able to update to latest firmware version so I can at least cross that off the troubleshooting list.

Yeah I have a lot of devices hardwired to the router & to a switch connected to the router, and they all went down. That’s actually how I first noticed it, I think I was watching something on Apple TV, that’s directly plugged into the router, when the service dropped.

In that case, it sounds like the router itself is having issues. You could try factory resetting or even installing a 3rd party firmware. Though I'm willing to bet something has failed/damaged due to heat and you're going to need new hardware.

This is why I stopped using all in one wireless routers. I'm never going back to Asus, Netgear etc.
If someone is tech savy/willing, take a look at Unifi, Mikrotik etc. I'm a huge fan of Unifi products. My Unifi router, switches and 5 access points are going on 5+ years now without a hiccup. If something fails or I want to upgrade, I can just upgrade individual pieces as needed.

This showed up on Code Project news feeds this morning. Initial problems started on the 17th.
What's happening to ASUS routers this morning?

Yep that issue appears to be the same one in that Reddit link posted by Ricardo as well, and I’m guessing what was wrong with my router, but everything seems to be working now!!!!….(knock on wood)
After I updated the firmware yesterday, around 6 pm, everything has been stable. I didn’t want to post anything sooner fearing I’d jinx it.
but yeah whatever the issue was, likely that security daemon, either the firmware update contained a fix, or the process of actually updating and rebooting got rid of it….at least for now.
Thanks again to everyone that chimed in with ideas & information.
