We have AT&T Fiber running through the Arris BGW210-700 modem+router combo..

I bought some smart plugs yesterday so I could turn on/off Christmas lights using Alexa. The plugs only work on 2.4ghz wifi network, and the Arris BGW210 does not split the 2.4ghz/5ghz bands, so the plugs would not install.

I accessed the router and changed the 2.4ghz band to have a different name, and the plugs installed fine. Created an Alexa routine and everything was working great when I went to sleep....

This morning I wake up and all of the devices that worked last night -- Echo Dot, Fire TV, Roku, etc. -- no longer have internet. I had to assign them all to the 2.4ghz band specifically for them to work. Now the Alexa routine is very inconsistent, as it sometimes turns on/off all lights, and sometimes only some

Why would all of these devices suddenly drop connection that was working last night?

I can't find much by way of tech specs for this Arris BGW210.. I have a TP-Link Archer C1900 sitting in the cabinet. Would I be better of doing IP Passthrough on their modem and using my own router, where I know it has two separate bands?

it does. but they are on the same SSID.... so change that.

Do the Echo dot, Fire TV and Roku assiged to just the original SSID? maybe you should log them onto the 2.4G or for the fire and roku set them up to use both.

the BGW210 really really sucks. ATT has no good routers. IP Passthrough is very inconsistent. Some people say they get it to work and some cant with out a massive speed drop. Some people on here say they got it working but IMP if you pay for gig and ip pass through gives you 600, it isnt working right.

So i have the ATT router doing the routing with the wifi antennas turned off with Orbi sytem as APs and its working.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised when they told me that was their only option for a router when I got fiber. I've got it setup as a passthrough and average around 700-800Mbps on a wired connection

I changed the 2.4ghz to have a new name, and was able to add the smart plugs no problem..

At that point, all devices were working properly, and that's what I don't understand. This morning, the Echo/Fire/Roku devices no longer had internet, and I had to switch them to the new 2.4ghz band to get them to work.

I'm thinking about enabling Guest Wifi on the BGW210 and just using that for the smart plugs, and leaving everything else on the 2.4/5ghz under same name with band steering.

Any downside to that?

It's awful. I finally got some ubiquiti gear and took the ATT router completely out of the equation. It just sits off on its own VLAN and only does the certificate authentication. Has been significantly more stable and faster.

I also now use a 2.4Ghz network on a seperate VLAN just for IOT things just like this.

Would you mind elaborating a little bit on what you did?

I’m on my phone so can come back and add later but I basically just followed the linked guide exactly. You will need:

Ubiquiti Unified Security Gateway (USG)
Managed switch (I got the ubiquiti 8 port 60w POE switch)
Ubiquiti cloud key

+1 for Ubiquiti

I have the BGW210 in IP passthrough mode with my Ubiquiti USG and haven't had any issues. Been running for for 1.5 years and getting on average 940 Mbps up and down.

I looked at that guide before to use the USG as a proxy but haven't seen a reason to so far.

so your just using IP passthrough to the USG and that's it?

Yep. The BGW210 is configured to only hand out 1 IP (to my USG) and I have wifi turned off.

The USG is connected to an Ubiquiti 6 port POE switch that is driving 4 Ubiquiti in wall APs and 1 AC-LR. I'm currently in the process of building a network cabinet and bought a rack mountable Ubiquiti 16 port POE switch for that.

I love these. I have 2 of the in wall HDs and a nano HD hanging from the ceiling. Using only 5GHz for every client that’s not IoT and it has been fantastic — range, speed, and roaming all work great.

Yeah they are very slick and I've got 2 per floor. I didn't want the "UFOs" on my walls/ceilings.

I wound up getting the AC-LR as the in wall units don't provide any coverage outside of the house for me but have it hidden. Also using it to handle all IoT traffic.
