Best media player apps for Google TV?

Just looking for recommended media player apps for Google TV OS for playback of locally stored media on the home network.
Occasionally I'll download movies & shows for my parents, and then upload them to an external HD I have plugged into their router. Before, I just had them go to the built in media player for their tv's and access it that way, and while it typically works it's just not very intuitive, or pleasing to operate.
I tried Kodi, and it's ok, then I tried Nova Video Player, and it was much easier to set up and had a more streamlined/simpler UI, but I already noticed it's sort of buggy. There are a few episodes missing from a couple of tv series I've added, even though all files are named in the same way. I know I could just use Sony's media player, or VLC, but I'd like a player that can scrape media artwork so they can easily navigate the uploaded content.
I'd never heard of Nova until I did a quick google search, so I'm just wondering what other free media players are out there that support numerous codecs & have scrapers for media artwork?
TLDR:
A media player app that fits the following criteria:
- compatible with numerous codecs
- adds media artwork & descriptions
- has a resume function from where you last left off in a show/movie
- is relatively stable/just works

Plex (free) is easiest by far.

Wait, can you use Plex as just a media player without running the server part of it on another device?

No, but it doesn't take much to run the server. A NAS can run the server.
