Best Note Taking Pad and software for a College Student?

My daughter will be attending LSU in the fall and she has always been a good note taker. While in HS, many of her classmates asked for her notes to study for their test. She wants to sign up as a note taker at LSU and is asking me to get her a portable pad device to take notes on. She has an asus laptop that has a touch screen but it’s attached to a keyboard. I believe she is wanting something she can free style write on. I have always been an iPad guy but I am not sure what’s the best device for what she is wanting to do. Anyone have any suggestions for what the best device would be for this type of application? Also, what software application is the best to use for note taking?

Ipad pro if you are in the Apple ecosystem, surface pro if you prefer pc.
I bought iPad pros for my niece and nephew for college, they love them. I always preferred the Surface bc it was easier to resize the bloated powerpoints.
Either option is good.

Niece that just graduated Emory grad school with her bachelor’s from UGA stuck with iPad when she updated. Never heard a complaint about the use or anything.
Niece is from DFW so it was not a local Georgia clique thing towards a brand. But LSU climate may vary.

Remarkable tablet is great, it;s a note taking machine ...
Yeah if you're doing like full blown notes, this is by far the best option other than pen/paper/scanner

If you’re a note taker at lsu using an iPad to take notes makes it so much easier to be able to send the notes to the kids. Also it’s the most common form of note taking at lsu

I have both the remarkable and an ipad pro.
It's all about needs. The remarkable is great at taking notes but you lack a little functionality with customization.
I prefer my ipad pro. I have an app called notability which allows me to change more on my documents than I can do with the remarkable tablet. I bought a case that fits my apple pencil and charges it while it stores it which was an upgrade from my older one that had to be plugged in.
I'm sure there are other note taking apps/software but I'm only familiar with this one.
ETA: Remarkable tablets can share but I find being able to do more with the ipad is better for me. I can email, text, convert to pdf, etc and it's a much smoother experience. I do also have cell service on my ipad so I do not have to be reliant on wifi when I'm not at home.

I appreciate everyone’s reply. Looks like I will be getting her an iPad Pro.

This is the way to go. Also, get Noteability. MS Onenote is good too, but I prefer Noteability personally.
The Remarkable is great for just taking notes if the iPad Pro would have been out of budget.

One Note has been my go to for over a decade.
For paper (especially when there are system diagrams and whatnot) Rocketbook has given me the proper versatility. I can scribble, draw lines, etc., for under $40 and have stuff auto uploaded with the app, and transcribed. Notes can be exported (both raw and "translated") are available to export to One Note, PDF, etc., and you can edit at will.
I was never an exhaustive note taker (I can't actually listen to you if I'm just writing everything you say, etc.) but RocketBook lets you use different colors of cheap pens to mark things, erasable changes, etc. If it wasn't for RocketBook, I'd still be buying Mugi exec notebooks from Japanese stores.

I personally like the 360 style laptops that fold into tablets. Paired with a Microsoft Surface pen or the likes. HP has an Envy line of them. I would make sure to go on the smaller side, 15 inches or less. Don't want a bulky pad.
Does both well without much sacrifice, except being a little heavier than a pad alone.
OneNote is a good place to start with software as the Office suite is provided by LSU.

Remarkable is the best physical note taking tablet by a lot
But for a college student I'd probably go iPad pro

New iPad Air with the new Apple Pencil pro is amazing. My writing with it and on paper is no different. The new gyro’s built into the pencil let you do crazy stuff you couldn’t do before.

Is this a thing? I can pay someone for the notes if I’m too hungover to go to class?
