What's a budget tablet/surface/laptop for a new college student? Looking for something very basic and will get the job done for them. No special software required, just the usual.

Best bet is to look for the college's recommendations for the major.

You can almost assuredly get much more than this on FBM for $500-750. I mean like legit gaming laptops with good GPU, processor, SSD, etc.

Avoid HP.
I'd recommend a lower end MacBook or an Asus. I got Lenovo this summer and really like it. The Thinkpad, that is.

If you are a Sam's or Costco member, I recommend looking there as they usually offer less expensive MacBook Air computers than what you typically find at Best Buy or Apple, and they come with a longer warranty (or at least they used to).
I'd look at an MB Air M2, with anywhere from 8 GB to 16 GB RAM, and at least 256 HD space. If you sign up for the iCloud service, you can offload any heavy files to the cloud, but 256 HD space should be sufficient for a college student. This is a computer that will last the student for years.

What do they plan on majoring in. That makes a difference
