On my Comcast box, there is an option for 1080p output resolution. However, from what I understand, nothing is broadcast in 1080p. Only 1080i and 720p. So am I correct that the box would upscale a 1080i feed to 1080p?

And then my tv would upscale that to 4K?

If that’s the case, is it better to keep the output resolution as 1080i so that it matches the broadcast and then just have the tv do one upscale to 4K?

You are correct.

This essentially comes down to whether the cable box or the TV does a better job of upscaling from 1080i to 1080p or 4K. If your TV has good processing it's likely better. But you can try both ways and see if you can tell a difference. Probably slight on most content but look for something with a lot of motion - sports etc.

I watched a hockey game last night after switching the cable box from 1080p to 1080i, and it seemed like the motion was a lot smoother and less blurry and I thought the picture quality looked great. I wasn’t sure if it was my imagination or not.

My tv is new and is the top of the line Samsung, so surely it does a better job than the cable box.
