Connecting a Samsung Soundbar to a Sharp HDTV

This is a stupid question, but I can't get my parent's soundbar connected.
I'm at their house right now and they don't have an extra HDMI cable so I'm connecting it via the AUX cable provided with the soundbar.
I connected it to the sound bar and into the back of the SHARP tv that they have where it says sound.
No sound comes out.
The tech nerds won't answer my question since it's too low brow.

I really doesn't matter. You'll still live in Ohio.

Check the TV settings. You probably have to set the correct source/output for sound.

Have you tried changing the input settings under sound, to external speakers....

Is it an audio out port?
If so, just make sure the sources are set correctly on each device.
My soundbar is fed from an optical audio out port on the back of my TV.

Have you verified that the "SOUND" plug you are using is output and not input?
That is a wee bit important.

I can only find one "sound" port.

I found a red and white audio out cable that leads to a aux.
I connected that to the soundbar and it works now but it's not optimal obviously.

What cable came with the soundbar then?

Just an aux to aux.
But when I plug it into the "audio" port in the back and into the aux port for the soundbar, I get nothing.

I bought a Samsung sound bar this weekend and could not get it to connect to the Xbox with the aux.
I had to go buy an optical audio cable to make it work.

Yeah, I am gonna order one online.
Would an HDMI or optical audio cable be better?

You can use an hdmi cable to hook it up to the TV. cable box to sound bar, then sound bar to tv should work.
I had to use the optical audio b/c the Xbox only has one hdmi out, and it goes to my tv.

So I need two HDMI cables? There is an HDMI In and HDMI out on the soundbar.

Your use of the word AUX is confusing.
If you are able to use the RCA cable (Red/White to Red/White), just stick with that. It is fine for a soundbar.

Well if you just run a hdmi from the sound bar to the TV, how is the TV going to get a picture?
If there is a cable box involved, you will need 2 hdmis

HDMI will not work.
Your TV has an audio output port, which will basically output any audio coming out of the tv from any device. You want to take that to your soundbar via RCA or optical.
