I’m not sure if this is the best place to post this, but here goes:

I currently have AT&T U-Verse DSL. AT&T Fiber is not available in my neighborhood (Baton Rouge), so I’m maxed out at the 100Mb package. I’m paying way too much on the U-Verse TV side for too many channels I just don’t need, so I’m finally planning to ditch U-Verse TV for YouTube TV.

As part of that, I’ve been looking at my options for internet service. Cox doesn’t offer true fiber internet at my location either, but they do offer up to 2Gb under their “powered by fiber” branding. If I believe their marketing spiel, it sounds like coax service tied back to a fiber hub somewhere, presumably nearby-ish. I can get ~300Mb internet from Cox for roughly the same price I’m paying for 100Mb with AT&T.

I’m considering jumping ship to wash my hands of AT&T altogether, but I am a little concerned about reliability. I hear a lot of folks complaining about Cox outages in BR, and my AT&T DSL has actually been pretty reliable (as much as I hate to admit it). The DSL service to my house is underground, but I believe the Cox coax would come from the pole. I don’t really need faster internet service at the moment so I might be willing to stick with DSL if it’s really more reliable.

Can anyone offer any feedback/experience regarding the reliability of Cox cable in BR? Does their “powered by fiber” shtick mean it actually goes to fiber somewhere close by, and if so would that be underground?

TIA

Unless it's AT&T fiber, stick with cox. DSL is very bad for the price.

I had cox at my office and constantly had problems. I have ATT fiber at home two blocks away. It has been flawless.

Cox should change the spelling of their name to fully reflect what they truly are.

I'd consider going with 5G Tmobile or Verizon internet over DSL, depending on how the service is at your place. Could get 300Mbps.

Funny enough, Verizon has been going door to door in my neighborhood lately. I have my cell with Verizon and I actually get like 400 Mbps (just ran a test) so maybe I should take that option more seriously.

There’s something about not having a hardwired connection that just feels a little weird to me. Any particular quirks/downsides to be aware of with 5G home internet?

I used the T-Mobile version. Latency is a little higher and there's some NAT going on so your external IP is always changing and maybe affect some connectivity. But I had no issues with the speeed. I moved to att fiber once an available though.

Latency is a LOT higher with cellular. Think 100ms vs 20 to Dallas servers. It is not suited for gaming. Also, the TMo router has no configuration options to speak of.

Cox has been great for me for 20 years now. After seeing the issues my friend has had with ATT fiber, I may never jump.

With your options being cox coax to the house or DSL copper wire I would switch to cox. I have had cox coax internet for years and haven't had any issues. Granted I've had modems fail over time and some outages but overall for 50 bucks a month it is great. Now, if Att fiber or any true fiber option was available I'd switch.

For additional info I have 13 business locations with att, cox, eatel and spectrum. Sites with fiber never go down. I never deploy a cable modem solution to those.
