any suggestions on a compact docking station so that I can just keep my laptop stored to the side for gaming purposes? I would've gotten a desktop but Mrs. BTB wanted to be able to play Sims 3 from anywhere in the house so we settled on a laptop.

No tips on a docking station. I just use the 3 USB-C ports on my MBP (2 for displays, and one to a USB hub shared with my PC). People are probably going to want to know more about your setup though to make a recommendation. What kind of laptop, peripherals, etc. are you working with and what connections do you have available.

I’ve got a J5 create 3 screen little docking station that sits under your laptop’s base and hooks up to the thunderbolt 4/USB C port. Has 13 or so ports on it and passes power through if you get the one with the power supply.

Victus gaming laptop from Costco. I believe i7 processor. It has GeForce 3000 series. Right now I'm running on a wireless Corsair RGB (I believe Harpoon) and I'm going to get a keyboard in the future since this is just a mini build in progress.

LG 28" monitor with up to 144 Hz FreeSync and Display port. Would HDMI to display port be something worth buying or is standard HDMI going to give the same results?

We use these for our Precisions (running Creative Cloud, CAD, etc) with no problems whatsoever. I use this as my main work monitor and the dock has no issues with it. You can find far cheaper refurbs (like $50 or so), but make sure it's the WD19TB, not just the WD19 (if you're going to run your power through it as well).

Note: HP and Dell docks no longer come with ports for audio (so you'll need to run that through your laptop headphone jack or BT).

I use this $40 Llnk to Amazon connected via USB-C (Thunderbolt) to my work laptop (HP).

Peripherals connected to hub: keyboard, mouse, USB ring light and two 34 inch displays.

Hub also works with my Lenovo Ideapad laptop, same USB-C Thunderbolt spec'd port.

I use docking stations daily, and there is a difference. A good docking station will synchronize video much better than a small adapter. The adapters often have latency issues. I have a setup with multiple monitors, a printer, keyboard, mouse, and speakers running into a docking station. The one USB C cord can plug into a Windows laptop or MacBook and work seamlessly.

I know the cheaper adapters will accomplish most of this (I have an adapter in my laptop travel case). However, it's not polished. It's fine every once in a while, but not for a daily solution.

I have a Dell docking station now, but a coworker just got an Anker docking station ( Anker) and it has a ton of features.
