How do you get the app to appear on your tv?

Tell me more about your setup. Smart TV? Brand?

I don't think the app is actually installed on the TV itself, you gotta have another device that has the Watch ESPN app installed.
Example: Amazon Fire Stick, Roku, Playstation, Xbox, Chromecast
Or you can just pull up the ESPN3 website on a laptop and connect the laptop to the TV via HDMI cable

I have a Sony Bravio. When you tune to an ESPN/secs channel there is a remote button to call up additional features (Direct tv anyway). That pulls up the app and select game as on Watchespn. Mine worked but I did not get sound and ESPN said they do not support smart tv at this time. Could see video though

I have a Samsung smart tv. Other apps (Netflix, amazon, Hulu, etc...) pop up automatically but I can't find ESPN

I'm pretty sure no smart tv brand has the WatchESPN app

My Sony definitely has it, at least with Direct. But like I said, video only, no audio and ESPN says they do not support smart tv just yet. But I can get any Watchespn game through it

is the only way to get the watch espn app on Samsung tv, is to buy a roku?

My sony anroidtv that i bought over 2 years ago has google play. Most apps support androidtv.
I have watchESPN on my tv. it works just fine.
There is no reason at all to need an roku or firetv if you have an Sony Androidtv, which i'm pretty sure every tv they make now has this. It has Kodi as well so you don't even need the firestick for that. And it has an ethernet port.
I have zero issues with any of my apps. The tv is basically a large tablet.

Pretty sure they still don't have the app available for Samsung so you would need a streaming device like a Roku. Also, the DirectTV boxes have a version of Watch baked in that lets you access the ESPN3 games, replays, etc.

I have direct tv. If a game is listed as being on espn3, I access that through the espn on demand function?

Yes, go to an ESPN channel and wait for the pop-up about watchespn then press the red circle button.
Or pull up the menu and select tv apps and then ESPN.
