Hello,
Cox is offering a free modem upgrade. Like most things free I wonder if its worthwhile?
I have Cox internet preferred running a Motorola SB6210 DOCSIS 3.0 modem.
The "new " one is DOCSIS 3.0+ but Im not sure of the make and model.
TIA

Buy your own. Cox is charging you to rent their shitty modem.

Yeah that’s why I own the one I have now. They are pretty clear on the terms of the free offer there are no recurring monthly charges.
Does 3.0+ offer anything over 3.0?

I heard Cox has gigabit internet now. Is this legit? Or is it just bullshite to keep people from switching to AT&T?
I have gigabit internet through AT&T and it's legit - I get anywhere between 800 and 950 Mbps.

A lot of gigabit providers require DOCSIS 3.1 to get those speeds. A 3.0 modem CAN do it, but Cox, for instance, is set up to provide gigabit services under the 3.1 standard and requires a 3.1 modem for that tier of service. Also, 3.1 is good for up to 10 gigabit down and 1 gigabit up, so there's plenty of room for increased speeds there, yet it is fully backward compatible with 3.0 standards. The 3.0 standard, however, is starting to hit its practical speed limits, though I think it can theoretically do something like 1.4 gigabit.
Also, there is NO WAY Cox is giving you something for free. You WILL pay for it somewhere. Believe their bullshite at your own risk.

I've gotten a free modem from Cox in the past. I've never owned one of their's so I don't know how they know I need an upgrade. My current modem works fine and I have no plans to get gigabit internet so I'll stick with my current one.

When your modem connects to their service they can see everything about the modem and they even update its firmware with settings specifically for their network.

I had cox top package offered at my house 300/30 and got a email this weekend about gig being available. So I talked to them and was told just need a 3.1 modem and they will switch and no extra charge or contract. So I was excited to get it setup...only to realize there gig service is 1gig down but only 35 upload....really cox? So I will be returning the modem and going with LUS for 1gx1g for less $ a month.
Also doing some speed test at the modem was all over the place. Sometimes 900s....700s...500s....200s. I was having them come out today to see why but decided I wasn’t keeping it anyway so why bother with them.

I've never seen 1 gig with Cox at my house. The most I've ever gotten coming into my Google WiFi is like 800. It's typically around 300/15.
Not sure, but I think the problem with upload speeds is that Cox is still running their signals through Coax, and not fiber. For some reason, they can send the faster signal, but can't receive it.
Eta: Cox did give me my last modem for free. I had it for maybe four years, and didn't pay a dime

Are you talking about it typically being 300/15 over WiFi or coming in directly plugged to the modem?

I had the free upgrade and it was actually free. I didn't owe anything a month. I only had to turn it in at the end.

That's speeds coming out of the Google WiFi main hub through a cat6 cable
