I assume this has been discussed ad nauseum due to the amount of searched stuff coming up. It’s just hard to dig through it all.

Dropped into the Best Buy the other day. Talked with a guy and told him what I wanted to do. Basically get my internet extended to the back of the house/outside. I have ATT fiber. He suggested the Eero Pro6. I asked if that it could be set up wirelessly or if it had to wired via Ethernet. I didn’t know if I needed one of the satellites. 2200ish sqft home. I have coverage in the house, but if we’re under the patio it’s not very strong. The modem is in the front of the house.

It’s a 90s home, not wired for anything. I’m not running any wires to the center of the house. I just want to get something decent set up.

He said I only needed the single unit and I could connect it wirelessly. That doesn’t seem to be working. Am I an idiot? Do I need to get a satellite and keep the main unit connected via Ethernet? Do I need to take this shite back? I got the mesh b/c everyone on here says those extenders suck.

Appreciate it.

Yes the main unit needs to be plugged into your modem, which is most likely a combo modem/router and you need to disable the router part of it. Sometimes called "passthrough" mode or similar. Search the ATT modem model number plus "passthrough mode".

After that, yes I would recommend getting a satellite unit and place it somewhere in the middle of the first unit and the area that needs coverage. If your house is a football field and your modem and main mesh unit are near one endzone, place the satellite unit near the 50 yard line to extend coverage to the other endzone.

Put another way, the satellite unit needs to be as far from the main unit as it can be while still receiving a very strong signal from it.

Yeh the football field is a good description and that’s what I said to the guy. I wanted something in the middle to extend it. Now I have to go back and buy more shite.

No clue about the passthrough deal. If that isn’t enabled then it doesn’t work?

Your ATT setup, is it just one box that the internet service plugs into and it gives you wifi? If so, that one box is a modem and a router. The Eero is also a router. You don't want two routers.

Passthrough mode tells the modem to just pass along the internet connection to the next device, namely your new Eero unit which will handle routing among your several devices (phones, TVs, computers, etc).

Now I’ll run back to Best Buy and return the singular unit he sold me and get the one with an extra satellite. Also, need to see if they’ll price match. Amazon has the eero on prime day sale right now.

I am researching the same thing because I have one device(chromecast on patio) that needs help. Two questions.

Does passthrough stop the ATT device from supplying wifi as before?

If I were to try MoCA, do I have to go through that passthrough process?

I don't think it stops it automatically but generally you will want to make it stop doing wifi also. See link above.

Yes, the passthrough stuff is just to let you use your own router instead of ATT's (though of course you still need their device for its modem). MoCA just allows you to use existing coax instead of pulling new ethernet cable to connect devices if you don't want to rely on the wireless connection between mesh units. Make sure your mesh system has ethernet ports to support a hardwired link, not all of them do.

Thanks Kork!

Went back and returned that single Pro I had. I got them to match the prime day sale and got the pro 6e with the satellite for just a little more.

Followed the instructions on that link and have things running. That being said. I have a bluesound node streamer. I had to hook that Ethernet cable to the eero itself in the second Ethernet connection.

I’m assuming that’s because I bypassed everything in the ATT gateway? I turned off the WiFi too per that link.

Not sure what that is or does, but assuming it was connected via WiFi and your Eero WiFi has a different name and password, it will need to be configured again. The same is true for all your WiFi devices, so the easiest thing to do is set the Eero to the same name and password as the old att WiFi. That way everything should just connect.

Music streamer, hooked up to my integrated amp. It allows you to have several music listening apps like Spotify, Tidal etc in an all in one app. It streams the music through hi rez, uncompressed files. Basically get the most out of your streamed music.

Because of that it isn’t hooked via WiFi, it’s through an Ethernet cable to maximize it. Which seemed odd that it wasn’t available when hooked up through the ATT box. I tried all of the connections. But when I tried the eero modem it started working again.

Who knows. But it’s working.

Oh I see, it was always plugged in.

Yeah, so since the ATT box is no longer handling routing duties, its other network ports will not work. That is expected and I should have mentioned that. Sorry.

Glad to hear it's all working now.
