Internet options in rural northeast Louisiana

My mother lives in northeast Louisiana there are no land lines or cable services available for her house. She currently has HughesNet which sucks donkey balls. She has been hounding me to help her find better internet. She has tech skills of a dead horse and I live a few hours away so I need something that is user friendly. Does anyone know how good Starlink works in northeast Louisiana? It only comes as a self-install system right? How hard it is to install? I have also been looking at the T-Mobile home internet service for her. Anyone used this? Any recommendations or information is greatly appreciated.

I’ve had really good luck with ATT 5G. T-Mobile just didn’t work well at my location, even though they said it would.

Do you just use your phone as a hotspot or do you have a separate one?

My dad was going to get Starlink-- vetted it out and felt the service would be satisfactory but they have too many trees on their property and couldn't get a reliable line of sight to the sky. Also super rural NE Louisiana. Near Oak Ridge.

TMobile home internet works here in NOLA, however, it's all very location/tower dependant.
I'd see who has best cell service in your area between ATT/Tmobile and Verizon and try their home internet 5G service.

I had dsl over the original telephone copper line. The best option at the time. The local ATT guys told me to stick with that and not even try hotspot through the cell service.
I was about a mile north of Toledo Bend and a mile inside LA from TX.

Being Oak Ridge are you sure they don’t have Internet through Century Link? Also check to see if she is in an area receiving fiber. Many companies got grants to run fiber to rural areas. Sky Rider / Ark La Tex Fiber among others are in those areas I think. If she’s even too rural for that check to see what the dominant local cell provider is in that area. Being Oak Ridge I’d have to assume it’s Verizon (Oak Ridge Telephone owned or became CenturyTel which became Altell which became Verizon). Any if those hotspots from cell companies are good enough to stream now.
Star Link is about $500 at Best Buy but someone (you) will have to install it for her. But those speeds are comparable to the hot spot boxes.

5G home internet uses a wifi router in the house.

You can use their provided wifi router as the main one OR you can always use a mesh network connected to it. That's what I do, my google wifi is connected to my TMobile Home Internet router.
It double NAT's and such but I don't really game.

Relatives in rural area have AT&T Fixed Wireless, which uses an antenna/box on the roof to get signal from a cell tower.
The AT&T signal at their house is so weak that our old AT&T phones got no signal or maybe one bar. The tech said he didn't get enough signal on his handheld device to even get a read, but once he mounted to box on the roof it drew in enough signal. They stream Netflix and the like with no issues. All their neighbors have it too.
I think Verizon offers a similar service in some areas.

My mother and stepfather got in that same boat a few years back. Starlink wasn't an option yet so I walked them through setting up ATT mobile service. It's ~$100/month and comes through a Netgear Nighthawk (I think they get 50 down, which is more than enough for the two of them as they have satellite tv and aren't into streaming shows).
The rep set it up at the store so all we had to do was plug it in at their house. I set it up just outside my stepfather's office so he gets good signal (wifi dongle on his desktop) but hid it so he can't turn it off or move it (he has early stage dementia).
When going with a mobile hotspot like that as the primary internet for the home, check VZ, ATT and TMobile to see who has the best coverage for that spot before committing to anything.

My mom lives up in north Central LA as well, deep in the piney woods and I go spend a week with her about once per month.
I needed internet for a business but the options were limited. Hughesnet was expensive and slow, too many trees for a good Starlink signal and cable was completely non-existent.
I bought a used ATT Nighthawk off Amazon for $160, went into the ATT store and signed up for 5G Hotspot internet. It isn't exactly gaming speeds but it will I can stream a movie on my laptop. I pay $65 per month for the service.
The reason I used ATT is because T-Mobile and Verizon have very limited service in the area. ATT is what most use.
*Edit: The rechargeable Netgear Nighthawk ATT 5G is portable and can be carried in your coat pocket.

Do not ever post but, you need to get starlink. I am in rural North Louisiana. I have 3 of them. One on my home, two on other properties. If you are looking for someone to install for you there is a company called untangled solutions up here. That's mostly what they do.
