Is 50 mbps enough for streaming and VPN? Not fiber optic

Xfinity essentially knows they have me locked in because they are the only one that offers greater than 50 mbps in my neighborhood and they have almost doubled their price. If I switch for a year to a provider with 50 mbps will it be enough internet speed or will I be kicking myself?

Not much point in using a VPN but your VPN might not be that fast.
50Mbps is enough speed to have 2 TVs streaming 4k HDR at the same time and a couple other folks browsing the internet.
Also, if you have an xfinity store nearby, it is pretty easy to get new customer pricing deals these days.

I called and tried to get a discount but the Indian person I spoke to wasn't budging. You think I will have better luck at the store?

yes. but if you want to try something else first, try Xfinity support on Reddit.

As mentioned 50mbps is good for streaming, but what are you doing via the VPN? If transferring large files that you have to wait to finish it might get a little frustrating, but the average person doing average basic internet stuff will hardly ever notice the difference between 50mbps and 500mbps. The bigger concern for me is the upstream speed (which is rarely marketed), and a lot of 50mbit plans will be only 5mbit upload which might be an issue if you have cameras that record to the cloud or if you regularly view an NVR remotely.
