Got a new phone and it has "messages" and Google messages on it.

The Google messages has some features but now half the messages won't send.

The default message app seems clunky.

Are there any alternatives out there for messaging? TIA

I use Textra.

Only the Google messages app supports RCS currently though. If that matters to you, you have to stick with messages.

RCS is about to be a big plus for Google messages if you text a lot of iPhone users. Since iPhones can send RCS with Android now with iOS 18. My gf had to switch from Samsung messages to Google messages so I could send RCS texts while using the ios18 beta.

Basically it’s like having iMessage but works between iPhone and android. You can send texts even when you only have WiFi. Pictures/ videos are high quality, read receipts, typing indicators, etc.

I love Textra. Pay the $5 and get the paid version.

What I learned from iOS 18 beta is all the bitching about how Apple needs to do RCS and iMessage bad and needs government to force them to go to RCS was pointless. Most these Android fricks don’t even use google messages to even get RCS messages. I’d say about 70% of my green bubblers in my contacts are still SMS.

Well, that is going to change .

Google won't release the API for RCS to the third party texting apps. That's going to force people to start using Google messages.

Samsung is already phasing out its own messaging app.

Hopefully, I don’t want to hear another complaint about blue bubbles again after Friday, lol. If so it’s your own fault ha ha.

I know. Ticks me off. Textra is a really good app and superior to messages but for the RCS.

Of course, Google is complaining iMessage won't play with RCS when Google is doing the same damn thing.

This right here. I have been using it for a long time. It used to be known as "Messages for Web." You can use it on your computer to send messages through your cell. My wife, no pics, and daughters, no pics, are all Apple users, and I have never had any issues sending messages to them from my android platforms.

For your android cell phone

For your computer

The computer version works with most all browsers, and works on Windows, Linux, and Mac platforms.

I mean they could build out and do universal profile, but that would take considerable investment. Apple did their own version and built out their servers. I don’t have an issue with Google holding theirs back from competitors.

It used to be, IMO, the best overall messaging app. They were one of the first to allow replies directly from the notifications/bubble. They were also above the rest when it came to compressing pictures and short videos on MMS messages.

But then Google stepped in and had a better method to compress pictures and videos (of course, a lot of this also depends on the carrier not suppressing MMS any further ). They also added most of the features that made Textra good. Once RCS rolled out, they became the defacto messaging app.

Textra is still the best option if you're into customizing the app. But Google Messages is king now. Their Messages for Web allows access to all of your phone messages on any computer/device. And with RCS compatibility rolling out to Apple devices soon, there's no reason to use anything else.

Is it ideal? No. Google sucks. If Textra ever gets RCS access (which is up to Google) and remote access to texts, I would go back to them ASAP.

This went live today, had my mom and sister immediately update to iOS18 and been using it and testing it all day with pictures and videos. Working great.

It’s not just up to Google, they can get their own server farms going and run universal profile or their own fork of it like Apple did. Google just won’t cut them in on Google’s infrastructure and fork of RCS. Textra benefitted from carrier hardware with SMS/MMS, they would have to get their own or rent for RCS.

Just use Google messages, Samsung is going to be taking their native messaging app off their phones going forward. It's actually pretty good imo , Google talk to text works better with Google apps especially faster talk to text. Apple or Samsung cannot touch googles speech recognition I just left Apple after 2 years it's horrendous compared. RCS im sure will get better between the two platforms going forward you can send bigger files also on RCS.
