Looking into putting up an outdoor TV under our covered back patio. Do you have any recs - do’s&dont’s to offer? I’m having to also add a new power outlet to the wall the TV will mount, so any advice there as well is appreciated. I’m a chord cutter. We are running Rokus and have already tested the wifi out there with a tv/roku setup. Works like a champ. TIA

I went super simple. Bought a Sharp 32" with built-in Roku from Best Buy for about $239. On the 15 times or so a year when I want to watch LSU baseball on the patio, I take it out there, plug it in, and stream via WatchESPN. The rest of the time it stays in an office.

I have an antenna for it, but haven't used it since testing it. I like the simplicity of plugging in one power cord and done.

This works well for me since I don't watch outdoors often. Your mileage may differ.

I do the same with a 42 inch LG. I have a wireless Uverse box that goes with it and usually isn't used. I take it out and set it up in 60 seconds whenever we feel the urge. We have a little patio stand that works perfectly.

The rest of the time it's in my office hooked up to a PS4 for the rare times I want to play fifa or something.

OP I wouldn't sweat it, if you want to keep one up permanently, just buy cheapo 42 inch tvs for 200 bucks and consider them disposable every couple of years.

What's your roof layout in the area of the tv?

Check your sundown times and angles. I put one up with a rotating bracket but I ended up taking it down because afternoon hours, the sun was to much to view the tv

I have had a outside TV on my screen porch for about 10 years 365/24/7. I wipe the pollen off the TV screen in the spring with a microfiber towel. That's about it. Never done anything to the directv box it's real dusty

Tigeralltheway - my house faces West. So back patio doesn’t get any sun in the afternoon. The TV really won’t get any direct sunlight after about 9am I’d guess. Then it’s shaded by roof.

I'm in the same scenario as you.

I got a 55 inch TCL tv with roku built in.

I also have to run a plug, and I'll run a ceiling fan while I'm at it.

The plan is to run a new breaker just for outside.

Breaker > GFI outlet that is inside > outdoor plug > switch > fan > end of run.

If I remember right, all outdoor plugs need to be GFI by code. If you run one inside, and wire it properly, everything else downstream will be GFI protected. The reason for leaving the GFI indoors is because it is more sensitive to the elements, so it may last longer/not trip as often. I also might be retarded and drunk on bourbon but who knows.

As far as the tv, get something you can absorb the cost of. I had a $300 32 inch outside for years. When it gave out it was just oh well.

What sort of wall do you have? We have brick, so when I put mine up it was easier to use the soffit than the wall for the outlet. Also got a ceiling mount that the power cord and cable gets routed through. The mount allows the TV to swivel in any direction desired. Just make sure you have enough structural integrity when mounting. i.e. ensure you are carrying the load on a joist and not just the soffit facing.

I always go with the cheapest TVs possible since using a tv outdoors voids the warrranty. I typically use insignia from Best Buy. You can get a 55” for $349 on sale.

I prefer to ceiling mount because I can run wiring in the attic out to the soffit. Was curious if your location allowed for it.

it isnt the tv being covered that gets messes up the TV. It is the humidity, IMO. You know the mornings you come outside and everything is wet when it didnt rain....well So is the inside of the TV. What i do is leave the TV on 24/7. i turn the brightness all the way down so the screen is black when it is dark. The heat of the TV running will keep the condensation off the circuit boards in the back. going 3 years with mine out back.

Love those guitars in your sig-pic, especially the 12-string. Bet it plays some nice chords, versus the cord that you are cutting.

Just pickin'. Pun intended.

Got my dad the 50" model for $169, and he's kept it outside 24/7 for the past year or so without any problems
