Trying to downsize my remote population and would like to use my PS4 Universal Remote as the main remote. I've successfully paired it to my TV & PS4.

I've already paired my PS4 Dualshock to the Fire TV, but can't seem to get the Universal remote to work on it.

Any advice?

I don't know but my Sony TV remote just randomly started controlling my new fire TV, which you would think would be nice, and it is when I'm in PSVue, but i have no way of exiting apps with this remote, so it's a bit pointless.

I didn't do anything to connect it, and I don't know how to unconnected it. On top of that, the game controller that came with the fire TV only works if I'm 3 feet from the TV.

Needless to say I am not a fan of the Amazon fire TV, but that's just me. I hate the interface as well.

I'm just trying to have 1 main source for TV viewing

I am aware of Harmony, but not sure if it'll work on my PS4. I prefer to watch Vue & Netflix on my PS4 and movies (KODI) & watchESPN on the Fire TV.

I hear ya. I had that until I switched to Vue, and I'll have it again once Vue decides to support Android TV.
My Sony TV has the locals through antenna, Netflix, watchespn, kodi, and slingtv, with an Ethernet port as well, which is all I need.
One remote for everything, even the surround sound.

The only negative is I have to clear cache pretty regularly, and sometimes have to go into the apps like once a week and "force stop" them.
It like there's no way to shut the apps down when you get out of them, so they are always in the background running. Its like when the iPad starts running slow or not loading apps, you just need to click the main button and swipe all the open apps away.
There doesn't seem to be a way to "swipe" the apps away on the TV other than going into them and "force stop" each one.

You should unplug the Fire TV every few days. That's what I do. Doesn't help with the cache problem, but it does with the apps running.

That problem was with the Android TV not the fire TV.

I only got the fire TV to see if it was more reliable than the Roku. Preparing for football season.
I read it had a better processor so I figured that would help with the random buffering even though I'm hard wired in. I haven't had an issue yet in the 3 days I've had it,although I won't know for a while now B/c my router and possibly my lines got fried from a lightning strike Sunday.

Every manufacturer has their own name for it, but it is basically sending remote commands through the HDMI cable. I have a Samsung TV and Blu-ray player that "talk" to each other (when I turn on the Blu-Ray player, the TV automatically switches the source), but other devices are starting to do the same thing. My Dish Hopper 3 will now auto-switch sources, and my Fire stick has been doing it for a while.

Well, I believe I figured it out.

I'm using my PS4 Universal Remote paired with my Insignia TV. Through that, I'm controlling the Fire TV. Only downside is that there isn't a home button ability to learn.

I am able exit some apps, but not all. For example, with KODI I can hit exit and go to the shut-down button. Netflix, I can go to "Exit Netflix". Apps like PS Vue (which i'll never use because I'll use it on my PS4), I have to go to my menu and go to root menu in the setting. It's about 4 steps that replace the 1 step that the Home Button on the Fire TV accomplishes.

My Harmony remote w/hub works with the Fire TV and the PS4, along with all the other devices I have crammed into my entertainment center. The only bad thing is that you can't turn the PS4 on using the Harmony. You have to use either a PS remote or turn it on by hand.

If you want to get a non- hub harmony remote I think there is a IR usb dongle that can plug into the fire tv, allowing it to be used with any IR remote as opposed to Bluetooth.

Have you tried turning on CEC-Settings on your TV? Your remote that controls your TV (Harmony now) would turn the PS4 on by going to input and going to whatever HDMI the PS4 is.

I can almost guarantee this will work because I have a stripped down Insignia with no smart capabilities.

Just going to the input of the device linked up with the HDMI channel will turn the device on (or bring out of sleep, like the Fire tv)

I have all my HDMI cables going into my receiver, and then a single output going out to the TV. I don't believe the receiver has CEC functionality.

To add to the confusion I didn't have enough HDMI inputs on the receiver so I've got a few that run from an HDMI source selector and then into the tv.

Having turn it on isn't a big deal to me as I don't use my PS4 much anyway. It's much simpler to just is the Fire TV for Vue.

Maybe you can make the PS4 HDMI a main line into the TV and switch it out with something that you CAN manually control with Harmony?

Ps Vue on the PS4 is way better than on the Fire TV IMO.

I guess by simpler I meant it's easier for my wife and less tech savy users at my house.
