I pay for 1gb internet with unlimited data, no one is at my house, I have ethernet plugged in. My download speeds for anything on steam and game pass max out around 15mb/s.

Could this just be server issues with the launcher, or would it be internet/hardware issues? Could it be my SSD that is relatively old? Any way for me to be able to tell what is causing this?

Steam is just slow, you aren't alone.

It's probably not you, it's them. I've gotten 80MB/s downloading WoW classic. PS5 gets about 10, steam not much better.

You wired or wireless?

I am wired and I regularly get in excess of 750mb/s on Steam and 500-600+ on XBox.

There should be plenty of hardware performance test apps but that isn’t your problem.
For internet, go to Speedtest.net. If bad, reboot router. If still bad, try again in a couple hours, if good, your ISP was congested. If bad, try again tomorrow morning, then have to troubleshoot.
If speed test is always good, the game host sucks which seems odd for a company that prints money but I don’t game.

If your d/l is actually tipping out around 12MB/s then your wires link may be poor and using a 100mbps link instead of 1000.

No. I get a full gig when I’m hard wired at home.

Steam and Epic both have slow downloads. They usually top out around 500Mbps in my area (at&t fiber kansas city).

Not sure why I'm getting downvoted. If you're getting painfully slow Steam downloads, there's a problem on your end. I just downloaded FO4 for illustrative purposes and am "only" getting low to mid 900mb/s this morning:

Yea Steam will eat every bit of bandwidth that you give it.

Could be a hardware limitation (Steam downloads will bog down CPU usage), shitty ethernet cable or OP has his download server set incorrectly in Steam.

Or OP has some VPN or something running in the background

Edit: To add to this, I bet OP still has his steam downloads reading in BYTEs instead of BITs, which would still put him well short of the 1gig he's paying for, but leads me to believe it could be a cable issue

I definitely thought of the hardware issue, but my brain actually went to drive speed, but that would be slow even for spinning rust.

Could definitely host of issues, but Steam’s backbone ain’t it

Just to elaborate on this if people aren’t familiar: back in the day, you downloaded a game, then you installed it. For the last few years, Steam has packaged games in a way that allows you to install it as you go. If you look at my screenshot, you’ll notice that my drive speed is just a touch higher than my download speed, but they are essentially matched. That’s because my drive is faster than my internet connection, so it’s taking every bit of bandwidth Steam will give. Interestingly, if you have a fast internet connection, it’s actually faster *not* to download preorders. It will actually take your CPU longer to unencrypt the files than it would to download them from scratch.

Go to Settings > Downloads. Make sure that "Limit Download Speeds" and "Throttle downloads while streaming" are turned off.

Subtle “I have fiber and you poors still have cable” brag.

In the same menu, also try playing with your download region. For my south Louisiana baws, I've had nothing but good experiences with the "US - Houston" region. But just play around with different ones if you're getting markedly slower download speeds than you get during a bandwidth test.
