Plex Not Recognizing Content
Posted on 5/14/22 at 11:16 am

I've had this issue for quite a while where some content will be identified in the media folder and other content will not. I follow all suggestions re: separate folders, naming convention, etc. I have researched and performed pretty much every suggested fix for this with limited success.
- I am familiar and have performed the "Plex Dance" many times with varying amounts of success.
- I have each file automatically labeled appropriately including the imdb number via Radarr.
- I have gone so far as rebuilding the library after relabeling via Filebot.
It's annoying as hell that some media will be quickly added to the Plex library and others are not. Does anyone have any wisdom on this topic or can you point me to an obscure reference that may address this issue? Thanks.

Is this for movies or tv shows or both?
Do you have separate folders and libraries for the two?

Problem is with movies. Have separate folders and libraries for both. Never had an issue at all with tv.

Only time I have issues is with accidentally torrenting compressed files that need extracting. Even once I've extracted them they sometimes won't show up on recommended immediately but I can find them in the library.

I don't bother putting the IMDB number in my titles.
Have you tried posting under the Plex forums?
This is how I do mine. I use filebot to label my movies. However, a lot of times I have to manually label some of them, because it won't find the correct title.
Maybe you could try going into your movie library settings, then manage library and edit, then under "add folders" remove them. Do a scan. Then readd the movie folder and do a new scan. I noticed you said you have tried rebuilding after renaming with filebot, but did you first scan without the folders to clear it and then readd/scan?
Plex doesn't always match the movies (they still show up though), so I have to manually fix match. That is when I may use the imdb number inside of Plex. However, you are saying they aren't showing up at all. Can you provide maybe a movie that isn't being detected? I assume they are all either mp4 or mkv?

are file permissions correct on those files so they're accessible by the plex server process (don't know what OS this is)?

I never bothered putting the IMDB numbers in my titles either until recently and it seemed to identify movies better so I thought this was a plus.
I thought I'd post here because I know there are many users and not sure they'd welcome another post on an issue that has multiple posts. I will do it, though.
When I rebuilt the library I removed the files to a different location and noticed in Plex that all of movies were removed from the library. Mine is set to update when there are changes to the folder, so I assumed that was happening. I'm sure there is the possibility of still having associated data in there which could still give me trouble, so I will try it again using your suggestion. I will also rename simply as you have done.
To answer your question, you are correct -- the movies don't show up in Plex at all. Here is an example of how my files are currently named. Plex has not recognized this file. Each movie has its own folder in the 'movies' folder. I can remove all of the other information and see if that helps.

quote:Short answer is they should be. I keyed in on this because it is in all of the other solutions. This is a Synology NAS. I have followed tutorials on ensuring this is the case. Of course I'm willing to revisit it. Seems strange to find only some of the files and not others if the process can see it. It should be 'all or none'.

I went ahead and added 2000 mules to see if my Plex would pick it up and it did.
That is so strange you are having these issues. I also don't blame you for coming here for help. I would have done the same. I just thought I'd suggest the Plex forums as well. The more help the better. They don't mind repetitive issues.
I really hope someone can help you fix this issue.

This really is strange. Seems like if some work then the permissions should be fine. I guess you could still go under the folder settings and just enable every type of sharing or security option there is? IDK.
I would definitely try removing the folder from your Plex library, refreshing to make all of the movies under that folder disappear and then adding the folder pathway back and scanning again.
I know Plex has no issues with MKV files and I have several myself, but maybe you could try adding different copies of the same movie to the folder. I am just grasping at anything and everything.
Do the files it doesn't recognize have anything in common vs the ones it does recognize having anything in common as well? Have you tried creating a movie folder on another hard drive and testing one of the movies it doesn't recognize that way. I don't know your setup, but like could you make a temporary folder under your main hard drive, like the c drive, and then scan there to see if it picks up on Plex?

I think I'm going to make a separate folder with movies that aren't being recognized, rename them, and then add the folder to the library to see what happens. Will report back.
I've looked for commonalities, but nothing popped out.

Maybe look thoroughly through this thread. Some suggest creating .nfo files for certain movies that don't show up or match correctly.
I just created a few .nfo files by making new txt files, naming them the same as the movies, then inside of the textfile I put the url to the imdb for it. then save as .nfo. Then I just remove the txt and keep the newly made nfo.
This worked for my movies that don't match properly even though they were properly labeled. And this is nice for people like me that rather not put the imdb number in the filename itself.
I am so happy I found this out!

Assuming the files are named correctly, check the permissions on the file. I'm on linux. I use ls -lah to check everything in the folder and see if any permissions are off I do:
chmod --reference=FileThatWorks.mkv FileThatDoesntWork.mkv
Sometimes a chown is in order as well.

Never knew chmod had that option. Neat.
As for OP, I've had issues with TV shows before but movies are usually no problem. My method is usually rip from disk, encode and move into directory and I try to use the recommended naming conventions so it typically works right out.

One more thing to check.
Have you tried going into your movies library on Plex and selecting the option for duplicates? Then hit the three dots to them and click on info to see what movie files have been paired together.
Sometimes Plex matches different movies as the same movie for me and I have to split match and correctly match the mismatched movies. Even though they don't even have the same filename.
This .nfo is going to help me so much with this.

All, thanks so much for the additional info and things to try. I may not get to work on this today, but will respond when I've tried a few things.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

For me naming the file exactly as it appears on imdb and it fetches the metadata every time.
Title (year).xxx Omit the parentheses and bad things happen
for example;
Avengers: Infinity War (2018).mkv

I have a qnap but did have that issue happen 1 time. My fix was to make sure the latest version of plex was installed and restart both the app and my server.

Bumping this to share information.
I installed Jellyfin, an alternative to Plex, to see if it would 'see' the movies that Plex does not. It does. I gained 200+ movies in the process. The interface is not as slick, but at least I have a way of streaming on my LAN if Plex can't see the file. Still no fix for Plex.
