Plex Question (4K, Chromecast)

My buddy hooked me up with access to his Plex server. I use my iPhone to cast movies to my TV using an older chromecast (not ultra).
The issue arises when I try to cast a 4K Movie to my non-4K TV using my chrome cast which doesn’t support 4K. I get an issue about a missing codec or codec not found.
I’m obviously not expecting to view the movie in 4K, but is there a way to have either Plex or the chromecast scale it down so I can watch it in 1080? I’ve edited the Plex settings to stream a max resolution of 1080, but that didn’t fix the issue.
Any help would be appreciated!
Follow up question: If I’m out of luck on this set up, what’s the cheapest thing I can buy and stick in to this TV to get it to work? It’s my bedroom TV, so I’m not looking for anything other than casting a movie from my phone. I’ve got Apple TV’s and smartTVs in my main living room and basement.
Thanks!

I thought PLEX was the new target ala Limewire for the industry to shut down.

You're going to kill his server transcoding 4k movies on the fly
Not really sure the exact reason for your error

Vrai. I have recently downloaded a bunch of 4k movies, but I have that concern. Specifically, that my friends will take my server down trying to transcode those movies on there non 4k devices. What is a good alternative? Should I only put my 4k movies on a local library that I dont share?

I have my 4k movies in a separate library that is only available locally. For the libraries I share, I have 1080p copies of my 4k stuff

Plex allows you to limit the bitrate of shared media, so I don't see the need for multiple copies.

Why are you casting with your phone?
download the plex app on the apple tv or the smart tv, and if you can't, then go get a Roku or Firestick.
