PogoPlug as a NAS?

I picked up a completely new PogoPlug personal cloud server at a garage sale for $0.50. The box has never been opened. I still haven't opened it myself.
Was thinking about hacking it as a cheap Linux server, but was wondering if anyone uses this as a cheap NAS on their network? Since the company that made these, Cloud Engines, Inc., went out of business, they can't be used for personal cloud storage anymore if you didn't already have it set up since it required access to their website to register and activate the device.

I was using one of the first ones they came out with. It worked but was too slow. My internet speed at the time definitely had something to do with it but it was too slow for me and since I was mostly just accessing media I discovered and went with Plex.
