question about over-the-air antenna and BTR Channel 2 and Channel 9

I am a DirecTV customer and they have taken off their air the local FOX WGMB and NBC WVLA affiliate (NBC has been over a year now). I wanted an over the air antenna so I could watch those networks with football season soon approaching. From the research I did it appears that I am about 21 miles from both the FOX and NBC towers. I went through a few of them and found one that worked for what I needed.
I did find that from all of the antennas I tried out Channel 2 WBRZ and Channel 9 WAFB did not come through on any of them - both of their towers are less than 20 miles away. ( I currently recieve them via DirecTV - but just found it strange that they didn't come through via the OTA Antenna)
Is their signal weaker than the others? Has anyone else experienced this as well?

Those two channels are a bitch to get at the same time. The towers are way apart from each other. I am putting another antenna in the attic with a splitter to combine them running to my coax cable wall connectors.
I have one antenna now and can get channel 2 and Fox, but not 9. That antenna faces NW-ish and the next antenna will be facing SE.

those two are hard to get.
Is that your antenna? looks puny
Where are you putting the antenna and are there large trees blocking your view to the area where the two channel antennas are located?
If it's not in a window facing the right direction you're likely going to have a hard time finding those two channels.

Yes that is the antenna I got. All I wanted was to get the local Fox and NBC affiliate in Baton rouge, which I'm able to get with that puny antenna. So it is serving its purpose
I was mainly just curious why I had no problem picking those up with the antenna but could not get wbrz or WAFB ( which I'm already getting with DirecTV)

well if you just wanted Fox and NBC, you could have just stuck a piece of copper in the ANT IN on the back of your tv and probably gotten them. They are very easy to get a signal from. I don't know the science behind why that is, but it is. I literally did this on my bedroom tv and the only two channels i'd catch were 33 and 44.
You're specifically asking about 2 and 9, which is why i said your antenna was puny. You're slightly further than i am. i can only catch those two channels when i have my Mohu leaf antenna in a window facing the right direction without tree coverage in the way, and even then it sometimes messes up the signal on a rare occasion. I can get 2 and 9 through one window, yet another window that is about 12 feet over facing the same direction won't catch 2 and 9, most likely b/c of trees. same exact situation in a another room where it works in one window, but not the other, again likely b/c of the tree in front of one of the windows.
My larger antenna is in my attic, also pointing out of a window, and i catch everything on that antenna very easily, even lafayette channels. If i don't point it out the window of my attic, i only get 33 and 44.

I actually tried that first and it did not work. I then tried two other smaller antennas that would only pick up LPB and WVLA.

well i don't know where you are putting your antenna, but if you want to get 2 and 9, it needs to be in a window.

I am currently getting those channels via DirecTV - so I am good with only getting WVLA and WGMB via my small antenna - because they are the only ones I need.
I appears that if I ever need WBRZ and/or WAFB my current set up won't work...

Difference between UHF and VHF signals. You need a large directional or powerful omnidirectional antenna to get ABC and CBS. I have a directional in my attic and it took a bit of fine tuning to get both of those channels and severe weather affects the signal.

2 and 9 are both VHF (Hi VHF) signals. Some "HD antennas" do not pick up VHF very well or at all but most do pick up Hi VHF.

Get an outside antenna and you’ll get 35+ channels including 2 and 9. And it does not need to be high up. 10-12 feet is enough if you have a relatively clear view to the northwest. A $30-$40 antenna from Amazon and a mast made of PVC or aluminum will do fine. Enjoy the reception.

Go to Antenna Web and enter your location. A map will be displayed showing the relative positions and distances of all local broadcast antennas. The site will also recommend an antenna to use for your location.

I like TVfool, would have posted yesterday but I was having trouble getting the page up yesterday.

Here are the calcs with Baton Rouge entered, if the op puts his address in it will give him pinpoint data. The antenna height is set at 10 assuming it is in the attic but could be set lower or higher.

SOUNDS LIKE your antenna is UHF only. WAFB is on still on Channel 9 (VHF) and WBRZ is now on Channel 13 (also VHF) so if your antenna is cut for UHF only that explains your problem exactly. Unlike the analog days, digital signals are either all there or not at all. A good VHF/UHF antenna pointed at the towers should do the trick. Outdoors is best, but mine are in my attic (Watson area) due to HOA restrictions and work fine. I actually have a separate antenna for VHF and another for UHF, combined with a splitter (works both ways!) into one downlead. Did this for hurricane times, and works great!

Mount it in your attic to keep the wife or neighbors happy.

And for your antenna aiming convenience.. WAFBs Tower is on the EBR side of the Mississippi across from Addis, with WLPB nearby. WBRZ is south of WAFB closer to Plaquemine. WVLA / WGMB are in WBR just south of Addis.

Antennaweb.com and out in your address... Tells you what type antenna you need for each network.

I have a small antenna. I can get both channels in BTR. But I have to rotate the antenna 90 degrees when I want to watch the other station.
