My phone is getting long in the tooth (pixel 3), so every now and then I look around to see if there is anything out there, but it just kills me that there are essentially no phones worth a damn with a rear fingerprint reader that have been put out in the last year. Why have they fallen out of style? You pull your phone out your pocket and without any extra effort it's unlocked before you're even ready for it since the hand that's holding it naturally sits right at the sensor location.

because they moved that to the screen?

cheaper to write software to read fingerprints than install additional hardware.

my oneplus has fingerprint recognition on the screen and i programmed my thumb so holding it with my thumb in the front takes care of that.

You are aware that there is fingerprint-reading hardware installed no matter if it's rear-facing or underneath the screen, right?

I feel your pain. My pixel 4a was the perfect size and form factor and LOVED the rear fingerprint sensor.

Now I'm on a Pixel 7a with the fingerprint sensor in the screen and it sucks. Only works about half the time.

Honestly, from a basic layout and form factor standpoint the pixel 3 is about perfect. Alas, it's days are numbered.

The zenfone 10 is probably the only new phone I've seen that has piqued my interest. It has a side fingerprint reader which I've never used. Anyone have any experience with one of those?

The pixel rear fingerprint scanner was the GOAT. I miss mine.

That's just the Pixel behaving like a Pixel.

Pixel phones are usually a year behind the competition when it comes to features. The only thing they excel at is the camera software. Their Pixel Fold is a joke at $1800.

You can unlock your phone just by looking at it these days

I agree. I've hatted the switch from rear to front since the beginning. Sony's phones have a side button.

You have (or had) a side reader? How did you like it? Do you have to swipe or just tap?

With a very noticeable reduction in battery life.

I think it is my dad's recent Moto that has a side finger print reader. It is on the power button if I remember right. So whenever he pushes the power button to wake, the finger print scanner unlocks at same time.

I have one on my 10 year old Samsung tablet and it works great.
