I have a new dell wn 11 desktop. Can’t decide whether to extend or use something else.
Any suggestions? I’ve never heard anything good about McAfee.

Then go read modern AV testing sites. If your ISP provides you a free McAfee subscription, try that first. They completely nuked McAfee and started from scratch about 2 years ago. It is the lightest/fastest AV I have tried other than Kaspersky and it has scored perfect detection scores for many months in a row now.
If you dont like that, bitdefender free is a bit slower but very effective.

Why do you think you need an antivirus software?
After you think about it, most times you realize you don't need one at all

Windows Defender has been more than enough for the average home user for many years now. You really don’t need anything beyond that.

I do a good bit of small business consulting. I recommend to my clients that they just use Windows Defender and supplement with Malware Bytes.
If you are going to spend money - I would spend it on Malware Bytes. The free version will not run automatically. Paid version of MB runs scheduled scans.
That combo has worked well.

Anything questionable (pron, hacker sites, etc) I do on separate, dedicated PCs.

Free MS defender circa 2008 all you need unless you’re doing weird stuff.

This is the answer. Don’t do shady stuff on the same machine or even the same VLAN as you do business stuff. End of story.

Surfshark VPN provides "free" anti-virus software with their VPN service.
Works for me. I also use a MacBook Air.
