I have a Roku Premier+ that I've had for a few years with no problems. In the last 6 weeks or so it's killing batteries, like every week I'm replacing batteries. The remote has the private listening headphone jack and I know that will drain batteries but no one ever uses that here so unless it's kicking on and off randomly when no one is using the tv I don't think that's it.

Any ideas what could be causing this? For now I'm just pulling the batteries out when not in use.

I have two of them that do the same.

My dog chewed one of them, so I figured that was the cause.

I usually get about two weeks, maximum, on my Roku remote with headphone jack.

Even when not in use.

I do.

Roku with RF stays active as long as the stick/box is "on" which could include the Roku being in sleep mode or active for other reasons but not truly off.

When you turn it on do you get the battery icon in the upper right corner indicating RF is active?

If not then the RF is on constantly and the Roku device is not truly in a off state.

Installed any apps recently? A bad app could leave the device in an ON state even if the tv is off.

To test this theory try physically unplugging your device when done (pull the power completely) for a week and see if your remote battery life improves dramatically.

Remember the remote is tied to the device so if it thinks the device is on the remote will also stay active and run your battery out.

Pulling the batteries from the remote isn't really addressing the problem.

Worst case factory reset the device and I bet your remote will be fine again

As much as I am against using my phone as a remote, I have had to give up and do this. Way more reliable.

I have had to do this as well.

The Roku remotes eat batteries like nothing I have ever seen.

You must have some bug as CAD described above. I have 5 various model Rokus in my house, some with and some without headphone jack on the remotes, and none of them eat batteries like this. One of them in particular gets a shite ton of use, and its batteries usually last 6+ months. The other 4 I could not tell you when I last changed the batteries, at least a year ago.

That is good to know.

Yeah, I have 3 Roku TVs and 1 roku device and at least 3 seem to have issues with batteries.

I might try to get some replacement remotes.

Thanks for sharing.

you know that tv doesn't actually power down which is why it boots to the homescreen in about 3 seconds when you hit power right?

as an experiment if you go into the roku settings and actually select 'reboot tv' option you'll see it takes several minutes to reboot and come back up. btw, you should do this if you ever have audio issues or as a best practice i try to do a hard 'reboot' about once a week just for good measure.

if you have any hdmi devices connected (like say, an xbox or something) and you don't turn that device off but just turn the TV off it is still "on" and will rapidly drain your battery.

so keep that in mind. a roku tv is more complicated because its managing all those HDMI ports as well as the built-in roku system and so those devices are, by extension, part of the 'roku os' and if you leave them on, the remote is in high-power mode and the battery will drain in no time.

Nope. I only see the battery icon when I replace the batteries.

I googled this and saw other people post on the Roku forum about the same problem. I registered at that site and sent a PM to someone who works there and responded to people asking them to PM him your roku email and the serial number of the device. I did and got an email this morning that read:

Thank you for contacting Roku customer support. The issue that you are facing with rapid battery drain is because of the faulty remote hardware. As a solution, we are glad to inform you that we will be sending you a new replacement remote to fix the issue.

Haven’t looked into it, but I can’t turn on the tv with my phone? Have to connect to the tv before able to use my phone as a remote and can’t connect to tv unless it’s on.

ETA: nvm

I noticed the remote that has the headphone jack kills batteries. The headphone jack on the remote stopped working recently and now the batteries last as long as the other ROKU remotes without the headphone jack.

Is this true with Chromecast TVs? I ask because now that I am on ATT TV, if I select the small kitchen TV, to cast to, it comes on without me touching a remote.

thats hdmi-cec and has been a feature on tvs for a good 5-10 years now. this works with most hdmi 'stick' products that can turn the tv on through the HDMI port.

Is the ROKU plugged into an Anynet+ capable TV? Maybe it needs the signal to send to the roku that it's off?

We have a ROKU ultimate, two kids, use the headphone jack daily. The remote is dropped once a day, and the dog chews it. My batteries last about four months before needing replacement.

My only complaint about the remote is that it no longer chirps when summoned, and the battery cover comes off too easily. I can blame the kids/dog for that.

Thanks. Never seen it in action before because I was always on cable. Even when I used Roku, the TV was always on before.

Also “projecting” pics and videos on your phone works pretty well with Roku app.

FInally I have found the answer to this problem.  The batteries drain on the Roku remote when the Roku is not continuously powered.  This is the opposite of what you would think, but once I removed the usb power cord from the TV and plugged it into a wall adapter, the problem absolutely vanished.  I have come to the determination that the remote can go to sleep when it knows where the Roku is.  When you turn the Roku off, it is as if the remote freaks out looking for its home and drains all of its batteries trying to do so.  Even if you leave the TV plugged in, the Roku may not be getting enough power to stay on when the TV isn't on.  If you are having this problem, find a dedicated power source for your Roku and I'll bet your problem disappears.
