Hello folks. I am currently using a hand-me-down Onkyo receiver with 2 decent Front speakers and I spliced 2 smaller front speakers together for a more robust center channel. I also have 2 Sonos Play 1s in the kitchen and also the den used for music. I have been very happy with the set up with 2 exceptions:

1) I can't add surround sound in my den without running wire across the wall or through the ceiling.
2) Speakers aren't utilized for music because they don't run through the Sonos app (obviously).

Anyway, I was curious if anyone has tried using the Sonos Amp in lieu of a typical AV Receiver? I know the Sonos Amp can hook up to a Sub and 2 speakers with a simulated center channel and can also use Play 1s as wireless surround and that's one of the reason I am drawn to the Sonos Amp. I could utilize my existing Play 1s for surround sound and I can also start using my other speakers within the Sonos ecosystem.

My concern, though, is how a Sonos Amp can handle being an AV receiver. We have an universal remote so I am sure changing the set up to utilize all the TV HDMIs vs the Onkyo would be fine but I worry about:

1) Relying on an HDMI ARC and
2) Losing a center channel

Forgive the novel but I have been reading online and I haven't gotten a lot of feedback outside of folks paid by Sonos to push the product or home-theater elites who wouldn't dare lower themselves to such a TV set up. Anyone here seen this or implemented the Sonos Amp and have any feedback?

You would run an optical cable from the TV to the Amp and do all your switching through the TV

I have a brand new Sonos Amp I would part with if you're interested.

So I would keep the Onkyo hooked up for switching and rewire the speakers to the amp?

If you can run wires buying a AVR is the better option IMO. Way more bang for your buck.

I’m assuming you aren’t doing architectural speakers. Have you considered doing a Playbar instead of the AMP ? That would solve the ARC and center channel concern.

Your application is why HEOS is better than SONOS. Much more options with HEOS.

Yea, the more I linger on it the more I think it makes sense to stick with the receiver I have and just run wires eventually. I have a credit with Sonos from Christmas so that’s what prompts this tbh.

I love the idea of having more speakers on sonos or having audio from the TV, like a game, played outside. I just don’t know if it’s the best I can do for a set up.

I had an extra from a job and didn't use it. Figured I would set it up at home and haven't yet.

The newer Onkyo’s have a work with SONOS feature. You wound just need a Connect or the new Port to make it work. Then your AVR zone will be part of the SONOS eco system.

I have an older Onkyo that sadly isn’t part of that group. But this thread has been very helpful. I thought about it and my set up is mostly hand me downs that are about 7 years old. The onkyo has 4k passthrough and upscaling but doesn’t have HDR. I’ve already started to bypass it for 4k content and my set up is a disaster with wires.

With that’s my wife tired of my haggard, wire-based hell of a set up I think I’m going to use the credit on a play base and use my existing 1s as the surround.

Also, thanks to the gentleman who offered to sell. I’m impatient and wanna go try it out today but I appreciate your kind offer.
