interested if anyone is using technology for visually impaired persons. I want to try some things to help my dad make things easier. I started out with an echo dot with alexa but to be honest it is pretty shitty. even something as simple as asking it for powerball numbers doesnt work.
something that can answer basic questions like this and even make phone calls for him would be awesome. I am just not sure of any technology out there that would be simple to use but effective for helping him.

Echo/alexa is more tuned for use with smart home integrations, multimedia, and shopping.
Google assistant or even Siri will be better for general q/a with Google a strong #1. Hopefully MS or even X release a home device soon as they would be best for AGI and really help in your case.

Siri
This has been huge for my blind relative. Was previously an android user. Your local area also probably has a blind services agency/advocate. They can help with specific technologies.

There’s an app called Be My Eyes that has an AI describer or can put you in touch with a live volunteer to assist with questions or identifying objects.
