TP Link Decos are great. They work as either AP or router mode and you can mix/match different models. Super easy setup. I even use them as VPN terminals but you have to be careful with hardware version numbers to ensure you have those features. They can also reset themselves weekly for increased stability.
My only big complaint going from a business router to just using decos as routers instead of APs is that there is very little subnetting capability. Just IOT I believe. I don’t think you can fully isolate VPN clients from your home network. This is mostly due to the super simple interface.
Oops didn’t read. You’d want AP mode anyway for which I have zero complaints about these things. Even a cheap two pack of m4 will be a noticeable improvement. We use five x55 and m5. Each jump loses some theoretical bandwidth but they backhaul automatically when connected via cable if that is concerning.

I've been using it for like a year now with no real issues. It's not the best for gaming but I'm an old man now and don't have time for that stuff.
I use the newer Google routers (not the best but they just work) and it does well. We usually stream 1 large TV in 4K, kids probably have 2-3 ipad devices streaming plus we have 3 Nest Cams streaming and recording 24/7.
But TMobile is VERY good in my area so everyone's situation is different.

I have deco's running off tmobile home internet. I have internet from the street to my dock just using 3.
Tmobile does throttle our home internet, I will get 25mps on my wifi while getting 200-400 on my phone, but everything runs fine at that speed and off peak it isn't throttled.
