This is a followup to my thread about running MAME on Linux.

I installed Ubuntu 22.04 desktop on the Dell Optiplex 755. Installation went smoothly. When the system boots, it pops up my user name and I can click it with the mouse and type in my password, and the desktop loads. However, at that point the system freezes - mouse won't move, clock hangs up and doesn't advance.

I am, however, able to Ctrl-Alt-F3 and get to tty. Everything then works fine.

My assumption is that the issue is a driver for the video card (Nvidia Geforce GT 710). I have followed the steps to fix the issue from Stack Exchange and nothing.

Also, if I do sudo ubuntu-drivers devices it doesn't give me anything, just goes back to my user command line for the next instruction.

I am a novice with Linux, so what am I missing here?

Are you trying to use the nouveau drivers over the NVIDIA ones?

I would attempt to install the latest NVIDIA drivers, blacklist nouveau and then update initramfs, reboot, and see if you continue to have issues.

1. Uninstall all NVIDIA drivers
2. Install NVIDIA drivers (I think the below are the latest)
quote:

wget https://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/470.256.02/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-470.256.02.run

sudo chmod +xrw NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-470.256.02.run

./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-470.256.02.run

3. Blacklist nouvea drivers
quote:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf

Add:
blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0

4. Update initramfs
quote:

sudo update-initramfs -u

5. Reboot

Thanks for the help. So I tried that and when the driver unpacked and installed, I get a message that says "WARNING: You do not appear to have an NVIDIA GPU supported by the 470.256.02 NVIDIA Linux graphics driver installed in this system."

I know the card is installed because that is what is running out to my monitor.

When I click OK I get a message that says "You appear to be running an X server. Please exit X before installing."

In reading the ubuntu/linux forums it seems like these Gigabyte Nvidia cards and drivers are a royal pain in the arse. I'm wondering if I should just scrap the card and put in a different one.

Hmm, it could very well be that card. I mostly work with Quadro's and Tesla's in my homelab, which play pretty nice with linux (using PCI passthrough to an ubuntu server VM).

Quadro M2000 are pretty cheap on eBay, might be something to look to try out instead of the 710

You already know how to switch to a CLI interface, so log out of X and switch to a TTY, login and run the Nvidia driver install.

Yeah, their drivers can be a PITA.

You are suffering from retaliation due to this.

My ubuntu 20.04 build always has issues with my nvidia gpu. I learned to live with it.

Thanks y'all.

I returned the GeForce card to Amazon and have a Quadro ordered that should be here Wednesday or Thursday.

If it still hangs up I may try a different Linux flavor or I may just scrap the project.

bluebarracuda, just wanted to say thank you.

I installed the new card over the weekend and the freezing issue is fixed.
