Going to Lake Tahoe, so having a carry on only is not really an option. Should I be worried of my checked bag not making it?

Which airport? If it is Love Field you’re good if the arriving flight is on time.

Or if I did do carry on only, can I valet my bag on the bigger planes? I know you can on the American Eagles

If you are flying American from Baton Rouge, there is bound to be a delay. It'll be tight

If you're not changing airlines, 40 minutes should be sufficient.

Flying American all flights. If I can fit it all in a carry on, I'll just do that. Thanks

Having done that myself, you have a 50/50 shot at having luggage.

Check your bag if at all possible.

Is it still a regional jet from Baton Rouge to DFW? If so, it will be gate checked and you’ll grab it on the jet bridge on your way deplaning.

The terminal link train makes it super easy to get from terminal to terminal.

You’ll be fine. If you miss your connection, there should be several other flights that day, depending on the time of day.

Truth! I had a layover there a few weeks ago. Sat on the tarmac awhile waiting for a gate to open. Then our connecting flight was over an hour late. Avoid Love, if you can.
