Suppose you just want to go somewhere somewhat last minute but not too particular where.
Any way to search that?

Google flights pick the dates and look at the map. What dates you thinking and from where? Cold weather, hot weather, mountains, beach, city??

Not really thinking of anywhere at this point.
Just thinking going forward it would be fun to say “hey let’s go somewhere this weekend.”

Definitely Google flights then LINK

Just put in an origin and estimated dates. Don't put anything in the 'Where to' column and click search. It will pull up a map of the US and it highlights prices over each of the cities. I've done that before I looking for where to go skiing

I was going to say the "escape" app (greatescape.co). You pick the home airport and duration of the trip (2-x days) and it would show you a heat map of prices to worldwide destinations. That functionality was free, now requires a sub (unknown cost.) However, it's no longer accepting new subscriptions.

I'm guessing it'll be available again at some point, but I scan Flyertalk forums every week.

I mean…this is how we do 90% of trips. My wife doesn’t believe of choosing the destination. The flights choose the destination.

This is how I decided to go to DC next weekend. Just booked the cheapest flights to a non adjacent state. (Dallas and Houston were cheaper)

Frontier has a similar pass called the Go Wild pass.

You can also sign up for several news letters that send out cheap flights deals, like Going.

You have to be willing to book a trip pretty much immediately when you see a great deal through this though, because usually by the time you get the email from one of those services, its been out there for at least 24 hours and will be gone within hours of you receiving it.

Airlines do these discounted fares a few times a year.
