American Airlines is a terrible company

Heading out Friday to Steamboat, flying out of SHV. Bootked SHV HDN, HDN-SHV for return on the 24th. Getting everything together for the trip last night I discover that AA has unilaterally changed my departure to Vail/EGE, no call no email, no notification to be found. So now instead of returning car to HDN at 11 AM on the 24th, I must be in Vail at 7 AM. Witha a damn 5 hour layover in DFW.....5 hours, on Christmas Eve. Over a three hour hold time to speak with someone at AA. They did reply to a DM on twitter that the change was made due to too close a connection on my original flight (50 minutes). How can they just do this, I am not a hostage, or maybe I am. No compensation offered for any additional costs I incur, not a FU, nothing. Just "it is what it is", How would you guys try to handle this? I have always hated AA, never had a great experience, but the times were best for us, so I booked them. Never again

This is not a rare occasion. They do dumb stuff like this all the time. I avoid AA unless I'm flying to Dallas or Charlotte on a direct flight with no connections.

Used to fly a decent amount,, monthly or so. Now just family travel, but this is my first time ever experiencing this. Luckily I was just told I can drop my car of in EGE for a moderate change in price, but hell, I gotta get home.

i HATE AA and never fly them unless it's BR to DAL and then back to BR.
I lost a full day in Hawaii 2 years ago because they just up and cancelled the flight from BR to Dallas and so i missed the Dallas to Honolulu. No compensation and I had to absolutely fight to even get a refund.
Then last year as we're packing our bags in PHX about 7am for our 10am flight, we get a notification it was cancelled. had to hurry and find something. Luckily found Breeze Airways.
HATE AA. HATE HATE HATE them
That is all....

I fly almost weekly for work, usually ~150 flights year. I am fiercely loyal to AA. I will occasionally fly WN, DL, and UA and they all have their good and bad.
If you fly 2-3 times a year, one situation is 33% of your travel experience.
AA isn't immune from poor decisions, but they are not nearly as bad as people make them out to be. There is a reason they are largest (by passengers carried, daily flights, and distance flown) and top 3 in revenue, fleet, destinations, routes).

What time are the flights out of HDN on American? I'm guessing it's just because of the holiday that they adjusted their schedule. The minimum connection I think it's 40 minutes at DFW so 50 minutes should have been fine. I'd push back. Find alternative flights online then feed those to the AAgent

No alternatives to SHV from DFW at this time. Only alternatives are taking original flight and overnight in DFW.
Could easily get in and out if DFW but that would actually be worse than the Vail flight in additional time cost.
Rental for car has made change to Vail drop off and no addtl charges or like 75 bucks. So we will haul arse to EGE at 5 am to get back Christmas Eve.
But they accepted the reservation, they changed my plans based on something and didn’t bother to send anything to Chase (I book thru them for using points). Or to me. If not for a warning of changes on their app when I checked last night I woulda never known.

I've had issues with AA seemingly every time I fly with them.

Appreciate your looking. But we are just going to do what we were made to do and drive to EGE. It really isnt that far, hell, I didnt know it was that close. But it did create a nice issue. Normally I would cancel and rebook out of spite but this is my first time taking the family plus others on a trip that I am footing the bill for the entire trip and money has gotten way out of hand. Left tickets for three days for 6 were damn near 5k! I screwed around and did not understand the IKON timing and the ability to buy those passes expired, so I had to spend an additional like 1800. The only cheap thing we got was ridiculously low airfare when I booked in August, so I am not eager to exchange my 300 buck tickets for 700 buck tickets.
This thing started as a cute little three day getaway

I hate AA. Can’t remember a time I flew with them and didn’t have an issue. Never again.

Volunteering to be the coordinator, and hence the one point to bitch at if anything goes wrong, in a place with small airports with few alternatives.
In typical fashion, it seemed to start off as no big deal, and turned into a cluster with you and all these people waking up hours earlier than planned to return home with a miserable layover (for domestic travel.)

Did they not give you the option to cancel and get your money back? Switch up the airlines?
Not to play devils advocate but I imagine that the layover time may affect luggage which would cause issues for you and AA at the end of the day. I could be wrong.
As mentioned above, this does suck because airlines will make these massive changes without giving you any kind of warning and you're supposed to sit there and take it.

Yes, there is a reason. Mergers and acquisitions blobbed three mediocre or worse airlines into one large mediocre airline. American is lucky a few of the other major airlines suck too. Thankfully I live near an Alaska hub and avoid those shitshow airlines.
