I'd like to take a cheap trip with wife and kids (7 & 8yo) somewhere within driving distance (12 hrs or less). I thought about taking them somewhere you can search for fossils like SC. Maybe take them to a cabin in TN. Just looking for good ideas for making a fun trip with the kids on a budget. I'll find a place for $120/night, but then there's a $300 cleaning fee and $275 resort fee or whatever.

Arkansas is a good cheap trip. Lots of natural areas in the Ozarks. You can dig for diamonds. Go in hot springs. Climb small mountain trails and they have some tourist trap stuff too.
Tennessee around Townsend outside the Cafes Cove area of the Park is nice too. Cheaper and way less crowded than the Pigeon forge/Gberg side.
Still had the touristy stuff and decent places to eat. Also a pretty cool cave up the road. Plus horseback trail riding.

Those two were my family trips when we didn't want to do beach for the cheap trip.

My kids are already going to Hot Springs to my parents in a couple weeks. My wife mentioned Gatlinburg, but the less touristy area sounds nicer. Did you use one of the big sites for rental or a local cabin rental company?

If the kids are old enough to be interested in History, follow George Washingtons life. Or the war of 1812 battlefields, or natural disasters (Reelfoot Lake, Johnstown Flood, Charleston SC earthquake. Arabia steamship buried.

San Antonio is a great trip. One day at SeaWorld won't break the bank, the Riverwalk is great, Natural Bridge Caverns is fun, and you can go up in the Tower of the Americas for the great view. And, of course, there's the Alamo.

Falls Creek falls state park, 1 hr north of Chattanooga. Waterfall hikes, pool, natural swimming holes. If you really want to go inexpensive could tent camp but also has a lodge and cabins. Could combine that area with few days in Chattanooga.

Gruene Hall has cool live music acts. Some are free, and kids are welcome. There’s even a basketball goal out the side door. My kids loved playing with the other kids, dancing, and singing along to some country songs. Good times!

I’ll second or 3rd new braunfels… can do schlitterbahn one day. Float the comal and hang out at the chutes. Easy day trip to San Antonio.

Haven’t stayed here but I’ve saved them as a possibility… one these treehouse cabins or glamping tents could be cheap for y’all.

I recommend going to the Smoky Mountains. The key is staying in Wears Valley and spending your time in SMNP instead of the tourist traps of Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge.

Try VRBO to find a cabin that fits your budget. Ignore daily rate and look at Total price. You could also look at the NC side of the park or check out the NOC.

I had a cabin rental in the Wears Valley area just two weeks ago, and I agree that it's a great base. I rented through Vacasa and had a great experience.

Big Cedar on the Arkansas/mizzou border. Plenty to do there. We loved it with our grandchildren.

The latest trend on VRBO and AirBNB is to list a very low nightly rental fee and make up the difference with cleaning fees, etc.

You can probably contact the rental company or hotel directly and get a cheaper rate.

Somewhere in Texas Hill country gives you access to the outdoors/hiking/streams/caves/Enchanted Rock/lakes etc. That's where I went for cheap 4-5 day getaways.

Buy a $300-500 higher end tent, not the Academy crap, and find a campground at higher elevation in the Smoky's.
At $30 a night, that's about as budget as you can get AND it will be a vacation the kids will remember forever.

https://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/frontcountry-camping.htm

I would recommend Balsam Mountain campground.
quote:

Balsam Mountain Campground—open May 10–October 14, 2024—is surrounded by mountain ranges and streams. With an elevation of 5,310 feet (1,618 m), summer daytime temperatures rarely exceed 70°F (~21°C) and lows may dip to 50°F (10°C). RV and tent sites plus flush toilets and drinking water are available.

I came here to make almost this same exact thread. Looking for a $2k trip within 12+- hours of southeast louisiana. We rolling 6 deep.

Currently looking at a cabin in north ga like around Cherry log or Helen. Can get 4 nights in a cabin for about $1k. Also considered going west to big bend but that’s gotta be HOT in July.

What else in that radius other than touched on already here?

Thanks
