I have a job offer in Turkmenistan and I am curious if anyone has ever spent any time in Ashgabat? I have spent a limited amount of time in Afghanistan and Iraq and have worked in Turkey for about 4 months spread out over 6 years so I think I have some idea what to expect but interested if anyone has any experience living and working in Turkmenistan?

Assuming you have a family? How long is the job? I'd go just to go probably. I don't know shite about it though.

I do have a family but I have worked overseas multiple times over the last 40 years...we will survive. Job is supposed to last 6 years with 12 month contracts (commitments). 4 - 2 week home visits per contract at employers expense. I had decided 4 years ago that I wasn't working over-seas anymore but the offer is generous and I kind of miss working overseas. Area seems comparable to Turkey from what I have found. Less European than Turkey but comparable compared to Afghanistan and Iraq.

Saw this on Wikipedia:

Since 2019, the city has been recognized as having one of the highest costs of living in the world largely due to Turkmenistan's inflation and import issues.

Wouldn't be 6 years for me, ideally at the salary offered it would be a little over 2 48 week commitments and I would semi-retire. 6 years is probably very optimistic considering location and scope of project...someone will be there a LONG time....

Not a lot LOL....at least not a lot for US expats. This is the first time I ever encountered one and I kind of make a habit of keeping up with possible opportunities like this because they can be incredibly lucrative. The state department has been building an embassy compound since 2014 and as is usually the case it is behind schedule and over budget....chaos equals cash you know. There are some oil and gas projects and engineering jobs but they probably fill most of those regionally.

Are you in the CIA?

Turkmenistan is basically like North Korea. You'd be one of very, very few Westerners who've been there. Bald and Bankrupt can't even get in.

I was going to say some things along these lines. It's extremely hard for foreigners to get a travel visa. Check out some of the travel vloggers on YouTube who have gotten in to get an idea.

The capital is a pristine layout of bright white marble high rises that no one lives in and huge thoroughfares with very few cars. Their first president that they carried over from Soviet times renamed days and months after himself ala 'The Dictator'. No way, would I stay there for 6 years.

I went down a bit of a Turkmenistan rabbit hole yesterday. Zero chance I’d spend 2 weeks there, let along 2 years.

I’ll also say it says something about this place that no one on this board has been there. I’m not sure you could name another place that this Board couldn’t give solid advice on.

It's always been one of the places I'd like to visit, mainly for the weirdness/unknown factor, but zero chance I'd take a job there.

To be fair Bald and Bankrupt has a tendency to offend and burn bridges in that region. I believe he is banned from going back to Russia and got detained in Chechnya and had to issue a public apology. Travel bloggers like Drew Binsky who are a little more middle of the road with their approach seem to get in fine.
