Is it worth going for a ski trip in Banff? It is about half the price than most Colorado ski resorts i've looked at. Looking for any advice on dos and don'ts (where to stay, is a car needed, how is the skiing, what time of year to go, etc.) any advice is appreciated

I will be watching your post. That’s our next summer’s vacation spot.

We are undecided on if we want to take a July trip or early spring and do some skiing while there

We stayed at Mt. Royal right in the middle of town and walking distance to everything. Check out Canmore while you are there also. Its a little smaller but reasonably priced. Our trip was in June so no help with the skiing aspect.

We just got back, I’m 55 and have travelled a fair amount and have never seen a prettier place. We decided to go in September for a little less crowds. Never had to wait at any restaurant, canoe rental etc. we stayed Canmore which is a quiet small town for 6 nights and at the Lake Louis Fairmont the last 3. Flew to Calgary and rented a car, you pretty much have to rent car as the highlights you are gonna want to see are in various parks and about 45 minutes or an hour away from each other. Have to drive Icefield parkway. Drive everywhere from Canmore to Jasper is beautiful. Stay at least 2 nights at the Fairmont in Lake Louise it’s best view I’ve ever had in a hotel. Highlights for me were Bow lake on Icefield pkwy, there is a lodge there that was closed for renovations, Mataya Canyon, incredible hike, we did picnic lunch at the waterfalls there. Lake Moraine sunrise I’ll never forget. Went canoeing on Emerald lake and Lake Louise and did a short raft trip on Bow River in Canmore. Lunch at top of Gondala at Lake Louise ski lodge, breathtaking view. Weather was mid 50s in Am and 75-80 pm, snowed a couple days before we got there. Originally planned 2 nights in Jasper but had to cancel due to forest fires. Will be glad to answer questions. Hiking for all ages/levels. Views of Lake Louise from Behive is unforgettable but 2100 foot climb had this ole guys legs sore a couple of days.

Locals suggested skiing early spring for warmer temps and better snow. Altitude there less than Colorado resorts and they don’t get as much snow early.

Thanks ictiger, that is the information I am looking for. We are going during the summer about the same time as you did but we will not be skiing.

March is the best time but at Sunshine Village the skiing can be great well into April due to it being more in the high alpine. Lake Louise is a bit more dicy the later in the season you go. I would highly recommend staying in Banff, free shuttles take you to any mountain from there. I typically shuttle in from Calgary as well, about $125 per person round trip otherwise rental cars are cheap and the drive is easy.
