Looking to take my family to the Caribbean in the spring. Hoping to get your recommendations on which island(s), resorts, etc. have what I’m thinking.

1. Relatively easy travel - flights/shuttles to and from island/property (Delta a plus)
2. Resort feel with good food on site (family all-inclusive might work)
3. Safe and easy to go off property with kids
4. Diverse nature (Great beaches, mountains, forests)
5. Activities (snorkeling, fishing, hiking, zip lining, etc.)
6. Not an Atlantis type place that’s got herds of people everywhere

Thanks for any advice!

You're now limited to volcanic lislands but not coral islands. I'd have said Beaches on Providenciales, T&C but it's a coral island.

Sounds like the Dominican Republic and specifically Punta Cana may have the best choices for what you want.

Interesting, I’m unfamiliar, so I appreciate the feedback. If I preferred the best snorkeling at the expense of diverse nature, but kept all of the other factors, what would you recommend? Thanks

My kids loved St John and it checks almost all of your boxes. I don’t know about the resort feel at the Westin there. We always rent a vehicle and stay in Coral Bay.

My kid had fun at St John as well. We went to a different beach every day to keep her motivated. Drove out to Skinny Legs one day and a chicken bit her, which she still talks about…in a I wanna go back good way.

Grenada is what you seek, particularly if it's:

Took the family of 4 there a few years ago. It's the "Quintessential Carribean Experience". Friendly, English-speaking locals. Americans tend to be viewed more favorably than other Carribean countries because of the US Invasion in 1983. Great food. Beaches. Maybe a little longer trip than say a Turks and Caicos, which might be fairly good option as well, but to me Grenada has it all.

How old are your kids? I always make a “checklist” of sorts for our trips. Things I put on the list are local foods, sites, animals/sealife, etc…. The kids buy in 100% and always look forward to the things on the list. The list is a way of getting them out of their comfort zone and trying new foods and local customs that they might not otherwise do. I’ll see if I can find our St. John list. With a little research beforehand It can be easily modified for wherever you travel.

ETA: I have our checklist from this summer on my phone. I’ll check my kids journals and see if they kept a copy of the St. John list.

The water at Grace Bay (Beaches) in Turks and Caicos is as pretty as it gets. Beaches is geared for what you seek as far as all inclusive goes. It is very expensive though. There are other options near there like The Palms that aren’t all inclusive but with onsite dining options.

This sounds great - Mine are 9 and 12, so finally old enough to enjoy trips like this

Nole, where did you stay in Grenada? I’ve been to most of the Caribbean islands and Grenada is still on my list to visit.

I’m going to throw something out here. If you can fit it into your budget rent a power cat with a captain and do the BVI. It’s an experience your kids will never forget. You’ll get your mountains, your snorkeling and your beaches and an amazing trip.

This is the one I struggle a little with on figuring out the trip there from New Orleans. Trying to figure out what airlines to which islands might have better flights and then how long of a trip to a resort once there.

We stayed at the Blue Horizon and loved it. Had a kitchen. One block from Morne Rouge Beach. Reasonably priced and a very friendly staff.

Now, having said that there are some other options that might be better although more expensive.

My top pick, although it’s not on the same beach area would be Sandals Grenada if it was a couples situation. Beautiful location.

I liked the looks of LaLuna and Maca Bana as well.

I saw Costa Rica got downvoted earlier, probably because its best areas aren't on the Carribean side, but its perfect for families.

CR has 2 international airports, which makes travel significantly easier. CR has an amazing combination of easily accessible beaches, mountains, volcanos, and rainforests and all of the activities. CR also has all-inclusives, but we've never stayed in one since there are so many great rental options and its super easy and safe to travel around the country.

Only drawback is the beaches aren't as nice as most of the island beaches, but on the plus side CR has great surfing.
