My brother and I wanted to take the fam to Clark Creek during the holidays. I have a 6 year old and 8 year old. He’s got an 11 and 2. Little concerned with how long the hike would be to the waterfalls. Or does anyone know if there are waterfalls fairly close to parking? An advice is welcomed, thank you!

The 6 year old and 8 year old are going to complain about the long walk the whole time. The 2 year old has to be carried, and there are a few spots that are kinda dangerous especially if the rock is slippery. The 11 year old might enjoy it.

It takes about 45 minutes for me to make it to the waterfalls.

Don’t bring the two year old. The hike can be very challenging

It’s a 4-ish hour round trip to see 6-7 falls. And hour-ish round trip to see the 1st.

Put towels and maybe a change of dry clothes in the car. You can easily get wet and muddy.

That said, it is a beautiful place. Deer season will be under way so wear easy to see you're not deer clothes.

It’s over a 500’ elevation change. Follow the creek when you get to it.

It’s a pretty challenging hike for the 6 and 2-year-olds. Lots of climbing and slippery rocks. Might be a safety issue with falling. Really cool spot though. Parking is right by the trailhead and you can get to a waterfall in maybe 20 min. For a healthy adult anyway. We usually just follow the creekbed. The walk back to the car is all uphill.

Strap the 2 year old to your back and huff it. Just keep telling the kids it's around the corner. That kind of thing worked on me as a kid, but maybe I was just dumb

It’s steep.

My 20 yr old and I did the first two falls last weekend and we were both dreading the walk back uphill. It’s a nice trail, but the first two falls are pretty meh. More like water trickles than falls. The trails are wide and gravel, but steep both ways. Coming back is all uphill.

Is hunting allowed in that area?

Nix the 2 year old. You will NOT be able to complete the full loop with the six year old either. If you aren’t in shape it can be exhausting with all of the up and downs.

And that’s even with packing a charcuterie board to have a good break/lunch. (My run was a date excursion)

Stick to the developed portions and you will be fine. If memory serves, there is at least one waterfall in the area.

Make sure you pack water though, with extra and wet wipes at the car.

It's been several years since I did Clark Creek, but I've done it two or three times with Cub Scout packs where the kids ranged from about 6 to 12 years old. There were easier and more rugged trails. There is no way I'd want to take a rugged trail with a two-year-old. On the easier trails, as long as the conditions aren't too wet / slippery, a two-year-old might be okay, although I'm not sure how much it's something I'd want to do. There's a good bit of uphill and downhill too. IOW, it took a fair bit out of an older guy like me. But my boys and the other Cub Scouts loved it. Great views and stuff you didn't realize there was much of in this area.

It is a beautiful hike, but most of these children are a bit young for this particular adventure. We did it with a 6 year old and an 11 year old, but the younger was in great shape and was very motivated to do the hike - sibling rivalry...
But you know these children best, so it might work for you.

Not 100% sure but in years passed, I have walked in late in the morning and come across deer hunters walking out.

That doesn’t sound right. Maybe 125-150 feet

I checked with AI and stand corrected:

The Clark Creek Natural Area in Mississippi features a variety of trails with significant elevation changes. The elevation change from the parking area to the lowest point of the creek bed is approximately 429 feet (131 meters)1. This makes for a moderately challenging hike, especially considering the terrain and natural features like waterfalls.

Make sure there's a 0,00% chance of rain whenever you go. surprise rainfall when you're at the 2nd waterfall is not for the faint of heart.

When you want a challenge, hike the primitive path.

I'm in pretty good shape and was sore for a few days after the primitive hike. Climbing up creek walls by pulling tree roots, usually there's a tree or two fallen across the path so you have to crawl under/ climb over, in and out of the creek pretty often. That said, it's a blast if you like challenges and being in nature.

The regular trails to the waterfalls aren't too bad. The challenge is the climbing up the significant elevation drop at the start the trails.

If you want to get out in the woods with the kids, you can check out Kendalwood Park. It's a short ~1.5 mile trail with a slight elevation drop and takes you to Bayou Manchac. We've seen deer, rabbits, squirrels, and snakes.
