By car. Assuming either Ozarks or Blue Ridge in NC?

North Georgia just a little over 10 hours I think has bigger mountains than ozarks. GSMNP would be higher and just a little longer.
Big bend National park has some 8k mountains also. I think that's a nine hour drive.

Find an Airbnb 30-45 minutes outside of Asheville. Stay for a week, and visit the local trails, downtown area of the city and GSMNP.

Drive up to Ozarks is not much different than heading to the Smokies.

North Georgia is really nice and not far, but then another hour or so and you are in the Smokies.
Ozarks are nice in their own way, but smaller by a great bit.

winter sports? don't waste your time. It's worth the flight or the 24 hr drive to go west

9 hours from Houston maybe. More like 14 or 15 from New Orleans.
Blue Ridge Georgia is pretty but it is quite boring. I'd keep driving another couple of hours to Bryson City, NC which is about an hour west of Asheville. Plenty to do there depending on the time of year op is looking to go. Rafting on the nantahala river, SM railroad, plenty of trails to keep you busy. To top it off it doesn't have all the people that Gatlinburg has!!
