Going for 9 days in July for a friends wedding. Staying in Heraklion. 4 of those days already planned by the bride who has family from Greece so I’ll take their recommendations for those days. I have little to no details on the days other than One day is catamaran, one day hiking, two days “exploring” but I’m happy to be there with people familiar with the area so I’m sure those days will be great.

Any recommendations to look into for the other 5 days?

Crete is huge. To see it will require driving. Personally I’d stay on the other side of the island for a few nights, but that’s just me I like to move around accommodations to experience different things. Even if you stay put accomodation wise, go spend time in other towns, each will have a unique character and vibe.

Here is the best guide website on Greek isles. LINK

From the main landing page, scroll down and you’ll find this content:

Have you thought about a ferry to another island for either a day trip or overmight(s)? Might make sense might not, Crete is far.

Knossos Palace was interesting. Basically an ancient city unearthed.
We did a wine and olive oil tour that ended at Titakis Winery where they cooked us a fresh, local 5 course dinner. It was awesome.
Also walked through Rethmynion. Fun town with good restaurants and cobblestone streets.
Crete is huge so definitely rent a car.

We stayed near Chania last year. It was close enough to drive to the city for wine, food tour and to explore. It was a good base but we had rental car. We did Elafonisi Beach. Did the gorge hike. Hike was a long day but worth it.
