Taking the fam on a beach trip. We've been to Orange Beach several times and it's been 10 yr since I've been to Destin.

I don't recall if Destin has that much better beaches and water.
We are driving from DFW so it is another hour drive to get to Destin. Is it worth it?

Destin probably more expensive but both places have been built up so much the crowds are gonna be the same

Definitely worth the extra drive, the further east the better. The water is bluer, you’ll find more dining & entertainment options. Look at rentals anywhere from Miramar Beach to Rosemary.

I'm biased, but OB blows goats.

Exactly the opposite of what I want on a beach vacation.

Give me west of Orange Beach in Ft Morgan all day every day. Once of the few places you can still find a good selection beach houses on the beach.

Imo it’s very much worth another hour of driving. The water clarity is much better but the crowds are awful.

Look into Pensacola as well. Last few years I've been to Pensacola, the water has been very clear.

The last time I drove the extra hour to the 30A area near Destin I thought it was worth it. Then it took us another 2 hours fighting traffic to get to the house we rented. I go to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach now because of that last trip to Destin. I had a business trip to Destin year before last and traffic was still awful.

Beaches and water are slightly better in Destin than Orange Beach. Restaurants and shopping are much better in Destin.

Most of the time we've just gone to Orange Beach though because I can't stand the extra 1.5 hour drive to Destin and the cluster fck with the traffic once there.

eta plus its quiet and ZERO hassle if you want to go hit a restaurant or even the local Rouses.

Oh, the beach is perfectly fine. It's the people.

Plus golf, good places to run, boat launch at the state park, a bike lane.

It's AWESOME

Meh, you can drive all the ay to Key West and not avoid trashy people. Even in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores...just stay away from high rises and you'll reduce your chances.

true story, i was eating a $11 blackened redfish and grits at the little shrimp shack there (subtle gulf shores has 1999 prices brag) and was chatting with the server; she was an attractive 20-something girl and made the comment to us "i've never been out of gulf shores before"

it was sweet and crazy at the same time. like i was stepping back in time but at the same time i had a hard time believing this girl had never travelled anywhere..even if just to Florida. reminded me of growing up in monroe in the 1970s and never travelling outside the state until i was much older.

there's not THAT much to do in gulf shores; we can pretty much hit all the local attractions in 3-4 days so it really stuck with me after she made that comment. i still have a hard time processing it.

We went just past Destin, stayed off the beach in Blue Mountain. We just drove to the beach every morning in Dune Allen. Had a real cool spot.

SLIGHTLY better?

-- Anything east of Perdido Pass (Perdido Key) is better than anything west of it (Gulf Shores, Orange Beach)
-- Anything east of Pensacola Pass (Pensacola Beach, Navarre, Ft. Walton Beach) is better than what's west of that.
-- Anything east of Destin Pass/East Pass (Destin, Miramar, Sandestin; everything along 30-A) is better than what's west of that, and about as good as it gets.

We just got back from Pensacola Beach and the water was pretty. Like the guy above me said it gets better the further east you go, but it definitely wasn’t brown.

Pensacola Beach ain’t bad for the people that hit Publix on the way into town and park the car for 3 or 4 days at a time.

Fort Walton Beach (Okaloosa Island) has a height limit on condos. They max out at 7 stories or the equivalent.

As long as you aren't near Waterscape, the beaches are much less crowded than the OB or Destin high-rise places. Think one or two rows of chairs and umbrellas instead of six.

You can drive west from there into Fort Walton and Mary Ester which is essentially a military town. The restaurants are less crowded, the traffic better, and prices are a little more competitive.
