Looking for advice and suggestions for a drive through the state.

I will be in Pittsburgh, PA and told my wife that we should drive around KY before heading home to LA. She has never been to Kentucky (we are both widowed and now remarried. Both of us as old as dirt...lol). I have traveled many times to Lexington for football and baseball games and still consider Kentucky the best road trip in the SEC.

So, this is the plan, please tell me if we are wrong or please offer suggestions:

Covington - She wants to stay at the Pickle Factory Hotel. Unfortunately, there are no rooms available on Saturday, July 29th so we will visit The Rock and Roll HOF in Cleveland before driving down to Covington to stay one night on Sunday, July 30th. What are your thoughts on this hotel and things to see around Covington.

Louisville - Three things currently in our plans (Churchill Downs, Louisville Slugger Factory - need to pick up bats for the grandsons, and the Muhammad Ali Museum). Thinking about doing the walk on the pedestrian bridge to Indiana and also Frazier History Museum.

Bardstown - She picked this place and honestly, I do not know much about it except she said a German town and I can get sausage...laughing.

Mammoth Cave - I'm surprised by her selection of this site because she is claustrophobic. But, we will check it out.

Monticello - She said there were a number of water falls in this area to visit.

Corbin - Home of KFC and I have friends who practice at Baptist Health so gives me a chance to visit with them.

Lexington - We plan on visiting The Horse Farm and generally just driving around in the area to view the beautiful farms.

We will fly home from Lexington and expecting to spend 10 days on the drive. Again, any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA

Mammoth cave is a great park. Make reservations now for cave hike/tours if you haven’t already. The short day hikes that start near the cave entrance but don’t go in the cave are also very nice.

We did this last year. It’s best to reserve your tickets on line. They have multiple tour options; I think we did the most basic one. Neither of us felt closed in but as I recall there are a few places where the rocks are narrow and you have to kinda squeeze through it.

We had to climb a metal staircase at the end of the tour; about = to 3 flights of stairs I think.

Keeneland in Lexington is a nice horse track/venue. A lot of fans go there on the weekend of a UK football game.

I’m on the far western side so maybe you swing down to Land Between the Lakes. If you’re around Grand Rivers, go eat at Patti’s. A little expensive but they got a 2” pork chop and all the appetizers like blooming onion and cheese sticks are home made. Awesome place and they got an antique shop on the corner that sells firearms to. Does a real good business.

Don’t know where Bowling Green is in relation to your other stops but the Corvette museum would be cool.

We often stay at the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill for the peace and quiet and good food at their restaurant. It's southwest of Lexington.

Not that far away is Berea and the college and crafts there are a whole 'noth'r way of educating young people. The Inn in Berea is historic and well kept.

If you are interested in plant communities, the Red River Gorge is a glacial refugia with plants there that are uncommon anywhere near there. The one lane tunnel on a state highway on the east side of the area was a railroad tunnel. It's memorable.

Check Cumberland Falls state park and see if you'll be near there for the "moon bow" on the falls.

As flat landers you might be interested in Arches state park on the east side of the state.

There is the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, KY.
Ark Encounter link
It’s between Cincinnati and Lexington. I haven’t been.

Might try the Kentucky Castle just west of Lexington. Not too far from Keeneland either. Cool old remade castle but only have about 8 rooms/suites so plan ahead. We stayed there a few years ago in June and the fireflies were awesome that night. The bushes along the road leading to the castle were lit up like Christmas lights from the fireflies. They said annual event but timing depends on temps and ground moisture levels for some reason

If you do Bardstown, I would definitely look into lunch at Bardstown Bourbon Company and find whatever gas station makes/sells Jake's Country Sausage and stock up.
